Background • Israel was established on May 14, 1948 • Four wars occurred over territory • Israelis take control of Sinai Peninsula and other lands previously controlled by Egypt in 1967 • Carter takes office in 1977 • A state of war existed between Israel and its neighbors including Egypt • Carter views this as a potential ‘flashpoint’ for war between the US and the Soviets
