Career Development Process Self-Discovery Career Research Design Your Career Plan Experience Your Field Launch Your Career • Who Am I? • What is important to me? • What do I value more? • Do my personal interests relate to careers? • How do I get help? • Career Exploration • Understand multiple career pathways • Review job descriptions • Short-term goals? • Meet with a Career Counselor • Decision-Making • Creating a timeline • Internships • Gain hands-on work experience and skills • Relationship Building • Job search strategies • Proactive job search strategies • Networking • update resume and cover letter • Practice Mock Interviews • Salary Negotiations

Career Planning • Make some decisions on your major or career interests • Develop short-term and long-term goals • Write down goals and plans • Work with a Career Counselor • Narrow down to 3 specific job types or industries • Creating a timeline (getting an internship, completing a resume & cover letter, sign-up for a mock-interview)

  6. Decision Making Review & Reflect • Asking yourself some tough questions: • Can I see myself in this position for the next 10 years? • What concerns were brought up from the following: • Career assessments • Career research • Informational interviews • Career counseling

Decision Making Needs vs. Wants • Do you NEEDa high-paying salary? • What is most important to you? • When to make sacrifices? • In school with an internships and extra workload • After school with little direct experience • When do you want to gain the hands on skill? • Education alone is not enough

  8. Decision Making Time to Decide • Narrow down to 3 specific job types or industries • Internships and job shadowing will help you confirm • Not permanent • Just the beginning

  9. Goal Setting Short-Term Goals • Design a calling script • Create a list of interested companies • Create/update resume & cover letter • Attend a career-related workshop • Smaller and achievable goals lead to completing long-term goals

Goal Setting Long-Term Goals • Gain two internships that relate to your career • Improve a specific skill needed to excel in your career • Build professional relationship with a mentor (faculty, staff or supervisors) • Long-term goals usually require several completed short-term goals (resume and interview skills)

Create A Written Plan To Do List/Checklist • Consists of mostly short-term goals: • Create a resume and cover letter • Meet with a career counselor • Can also include research: • Review myplan.com and bls.org • Things to learn or improve can also be included: • Learn how to use Facebook & create a Linkedin profile

Create A Written Plan Dream Broad • A daily visual reminder • Keep in a place that you can often see • Think of what motivates or inspires you • This image should help you visualize the end result of hard work • Examples: • A collage of your life or the things you want • A drawing or image showing your success • Any single image that motivates you

Create A Written Plan Timeline • Have a specific time to complete your tasks • 6pm-8pm every Tuesday and Thursday • Know what you should be doing in the next few weeks, this semester, this year, and by graduation • Utilize the Career Compass or design a similar one • If it’s not scheduled it’s not happening

Create A Written Plan Create questions or concerns • What type of education do I need? • Where can I find good internships in this field? • Do I need specialized skill in this industry? • Is this career in high demand? • Make time to find the answers from a career counselor, faculty, mentor or employers • The best plans are simple and often achievable
