  1. F.E.T.S. Mechanical Engineering Update by J. Pozimski On behalf of P. Savage 26th September 2007

  2. Activities: 1) RFQ cold model end flange inserts 2) Laserwire beam profile measurement tank 3) FETS support stands 4) LEBT

  3. R.F.Q. cold model end flange inserts have been delivered GUIDE CONE HUB SPACER FINGER HUB FINGERS

  4. Activities: 1) RFQ cold model end flange inserts 2) Laserwire beam profile measurement tank 3) FETS support stands 4) LEBT

  5. Design concept of the laserwire beam profile measurement tank Faraday cup Solenoid

  6. The problem relating to the supply of ALIO stages appears to have been resolved. David has tested the lower force motor fitted with a counterbalance and mounted vertically and the result is satisfactory. This allows us to standardise on the motors used and reduces space occupied by the motors (in the all important Z direction). Conclusion: the engineering design of the tank can now continue. Plan is to have the outer stainless steel vessel manufactured by a specialist company and to have the internals (i.e. motor mounting chassis and post-acceleration system) made in-house.

  7. Activities: 1) RFQ cold model end flange inserts 2) Laserwire beam profile measurement tank 3) FETS support stands 4) LEBT

  8. The FETS support stands main parameters Beam • Floor to centre of beam = 1650mm • Rail diameter = 50mm • Rail spacing = 800mm • Floor to centre of rail = 800mm NOTE: Floor to beam centre has been changed and is now 1600mm

  9. The FETS support stands vee blocks Corner vee block – 4 per stand Mid vee block – where needed Due for delivery on September 10th.

  10. Support stand rail vee blocks have been delivered

  11. … and the vee block components assembled They have now be dismantled and sent out for zinc plating

  12. Activities: 1) RFQ cold model end flange inserts 2) Laserwire beam profile measurement tank 3) FETS support stands 4) LEBT

  13. A conceptual design for the LEBT mounting system is shown opposite. The design uses one frame, mounted to the rail system of the main support benches. Upon the LEBT mounting frame the individual solenoids sit on 3 screw jacks which in turn sit on a vee + flat rail system. The solenoids are individually aligned. Shown are drift spaces of 10, 35 and 10cm respectively. The 35cm drift space has a vessel fitted with a Oerlikon MAG W2200 pump.

  14. Future plan: • Define future engineering requirements, divide work with extra manpower. • Finalise beam profile measurement tank design, produce engineering drawings and send for quotes. Submit for manufacture. • Test prototype support stand rail system and either modify or instruct manufacture of remainder. • Check structural integrity of LEBT mounting system and finalise design, engineering drawings and send for manufacture ready for arrival of solenoids. • Begin design studies for 4m RFQ.
