  3. Activities undertaken: • Seven Verification visits to Centres • Six Approval visits to Centres • One Development Visit to a centre. • New Approach to Quality Assurance (2 Centres). A total of 70 portfolios were sampled: • Level 2: 58 portfolios • Level 3: 12 portfolios.

  4. Verification Visits Outcome of External Verification: • Very successful • Verification confirmed good interactions between EVs, Centres, Assessors and IVs • No HOLDs recommended • Quality of candidates’ performance and levels of achievement are in line with the expected standards and assessment strategy.

  5. Approval Visits Approval: • Three Centres were seeking Approval using e-portfolios, approval confirmed • Two Centres gained Approval and have no current candidates.

  6. Verification Visits Good Practice: • Improved awareness of plagiarism (This information forms part of learners induction) • Master Files for each award – containing all relevant material relating to the award(s). • An increased number of Assessors have necessary industry experience for the awards they assess. • Centres are working more closely with the assessment strategy for the awards. • Site selection checklists available where candidates are located • Evidence of assessor induction and mentoring programmes at Centres.

Verification Visits Candidate Feedback: • Reported receiving good support, guidance and encouragement from assessors • Expressed an interest to progress to Level 3 Awards. • Recognised the benefits of achieving an SVQ in Food Manufacture. (Candidates interviewed at five centres, covering various awards at Level 2 and Level 3)

Verification Visits Areas for Further Improvement: • Centres may wish to explore and develop ways to promote an increase in the uptake of SVQ Level 3 Awards • Assessors should endeavour to provide learners with more detailed feedback for example comments, suggestions and pointers on how to further enhance their performance and future learning (progression to Level 3)

Verification Visits Areas for Further Improvement • Centres need to increase the range and diversity of CPD activities • Centres need to record evidence of CPD activities for Assessors and Internal Verifiers • Centres should hold regular standardisation meetings for the awards, these should be recorded and form part of the centre’s CPD activities.

  10. Verification Visits Way Forward: • The second year of the SQA New Approach to QA (NAQA).Two centres have been working with the NAQA since it was introduced. • NAQA – Red Amber Green (RAG) – sanctions are applied rather than a Hold. • The new system contributes to further enhancing the quality of provision and assessment.

  11. The Way Forward • E- portfolios – the way forward. • Photographic evidence • Video recorded evidence • Audio evidence • Spontaneous sampling of candidate evidence.
