  2. Objectives for Chapter 4 . • indentify problems that can occur if hardware is not properly maintained. • Indentify routine maintenance that can be performed by users. • Indentify maintenance that should be performed by experienced proffessionals .

  3. Maintenance Issues • Sooner or later you will experience problems with the hardware . For instance, the hard disk starts to act slow printer problems might happen . The keyboard & mouse might slow down ; the screen might freeze. This is the results of loose or incorrect cables, low power connections .

  4. Hardware Maintenance . • The best way to cut down on computer repair is too clean every3-6 months . If its in a dusty environment , however , you should clean it more often .

  5. Part A & B. • To avoid your keyboard getting dirty or your mouse messing it clean it . Dirt, dust, hair, and food particles can accumulate causing the keys to jam . • Printer : cleaning the printer prolongs the printers life check the documentation. If not look online clean ONLY parts recommended.

  6. Computer Memory . • RAM – is made up of small memory chips that form a memory module . Adding RAM or using RAM increase performances, Speed, and usability .

  7. Preventative Maintenance • All computers slow down when adding or deleting files. To eliminate and minimize these problems, Microsoft windows comes with a set of utilities that perform special functions. You use these tools to defragment hard drives, empty the recycle bin, delete temporary files, and remove cookies .

  8. Disk Defragment • Disk defragment occurs when a piece of data is broken up into many pieces that are not stored close together .

  9. Recycle Bin • The Recycle Bin is a holding area for files and folders before their final deletion from a storage device . The recycle bin contains files that have been deleted from the hard disk whether accidentally or intentionally .

  10. Temporary Fies • Various application programs, such as those Microsoft Office suite, create temporaru files. This action is used for the following three reason : • To free memory for the other progams. • To act as a safety net to prevent data loss. • For Printing .

  11. Cookies • A cookie is a small text file that a web site uses to indentify a specific computer . The file is created and/or updated on your computers hard drive each time that the Web site is visted.

  12. Specialized Maintenance • The Following is a list if internal hardware maintenance or repair that generally should be perfomred by a computer professional • Replacing the power supply or opening the power supply case • Replacing other electrical compontes. • Replacing the processor • Replacing or adding a hard disk • Replacing or adding additional RAM .
