  4. Misconceptions • Textbooks are often read in the same way that we read pleasure books. • Creates lack of understand • Limits retention of information gshepherd

Textbooks vs. Leisure Reading •   Using prescribed strategy of reading/study techniques provides a more successful method of reading textbooks; • enhance understanding and retention of material.   • reduce the amount of time one will need to spend studying the material immediately prior to the test.  • time is spent actually understanding the chapter when it is read initially.  Study time then becomes deepening your understanding of the material. gshepherd

What is SQ5R? • Study Strategy • Provides a different method of reading textbooks that will most likely enhance understanding and retention of material. • Not quicker in the beginning BUT… • Strive for understanding while reading first time • Reduces time later spent studying for tests gshepherd

  7. Techniques to SQ5R • Works best to chunk reading • Concentration • Research shows you remember most the first 10 minutes and last 10 minutes of what you read • Gain more by reading in 30 minute intervals 10 / 10 / 10 Hazy Area 10 min 10 min

  11. Survey (30 seconds) • Survey general nature of material. Read… • Titles • Headings • First and last paragraphs • Pictures • Charts • Diagrams • Summaries • Key words • End of unit questions gshepherd

  12. Question (30 seconds) • What are the questions which logically arise from the survey? • Change headings into questions • Vocabulary meanings • Cause/effect relationships • Questions concerning italicized words or phrases gshepherd

  13. Read (3 – 5 pages) • The first reading • Purposeful, but rapidly • Purpose is to gain meanings to your questions • Get main ideas • Establish continuity of thought gshepherd

  14. Recite (3-5 pages) • Ask yourself, “What have I read?” • Answer as completely as you can • Think carefully about the material before proceeding to the next page or unit gshepherd

  15. “Rite” (3-5 pages) • Quickly write down the main ideas of the selection • Important facts • Answers to questions in your own words • Use outline form • Cornell Outline gshepherd

  16. Re-Read (entire chapter) • Ready now for your second reading • More of a slower pace • Further clarity and ideas • Pick up unanswered questions • Look for details in this reading gshepherd

  17. Review (after completing the entire chapter) • Short paragraph stating main ideas of entire unit • Review your notes often to put information into your long-term memory • When you have an hour between classes, use that time to review notes rather than just “hang out” gshepherd
