  1. Chemical Interactions

  2. Substance A type of matter defined by a unique particle

  3. Matter • Anything that has mass and takes up space (Volume)

  4. Atom • The smallest particle of an element • Proton and Neutron in the nucleus • Electron outside of the nucleus in the electron cloud

  5. Atom

  6. Proton • A subatomic particle that has a positive charge. • Located in the nucleus of an atom • Heaviest subatomic particle

  7. Neutron • A subatomic particle with no charge • Located in the nucleus of an atom • Nearly the same mass as a proton

  8. Electron • A subatomic particle with an negative charge • Located outside of the nucleus in the Electron Cloud • Lightest of all subatomic particles • Almost no mass at all.

  9. Element Key Element Name Gold Atomic Number 79 Atomic Symbol Au Atomic Mass 196.97

  10. Atomic Mass Unit • The mass of 1 atom is measured in Atomic Mass Units • Abbreviated AMU • 1 AMU is equal to the mass of 1 proton.

  11. States of Matter

  12. 5 States of Matter • Plasma • Gas • Liquid • Solid • Bose-Einstein

  13. Characteristics of States of Matter • Shape • Volume • Temperature • How Atoms Move • How they are arranged

  14. Solid • Definite Shape • Definite Volume • Atoms are close together • Atoms Vibrate • Low temperature

  15. Liquid • No Definite Shape • Definite Volume • Atoms are slightly apart • Atoms Slide Past Each Other • Medium Temperature

  16. Gas • No Definite Shape • No Definite Volume • Atoms are Far Apart • Atoms Move very fast • High Temperature
