Phosphorus By Ellis, Andrew, Phil and Codey
Testing • We were testing for the amount of phosphorus in the streams around Green Bay • We tested AshwaubenonCreek at 2 places and the East River
Lab supplies • Hach DR/850 colorimeter • Six 25 mL sample vials • PhosVer 3 reagent powder pillows • Goggles • Disposable eyedroppers • Kim wipes • Stopwatch • Distilled water • Acid wash
Procedure • We put 10 ml of the stream water in in a vial then added 1 “PhosVer 3” powder pillow and shook until dissolved • Once dissolved we let it sit for 2 minutes then put it in the Colorimeter • Then record the results
Phosphorus Testing In Ashwaubenon creek
Results of East River • The East River (Baird St.) had .128mgL of phosphorous • Ashwaubenon creek (Creamery Rd.) had .93 mg/l • Ashwaubenon creek (Little Rapids Rd.) had .57 mg/l
What happens Phosphorous gets into the water source The Phosphorus acts as a fertilizer and an algae bloom occurs Algae die and settle to the bottom of the river Decomposers population grows and absorbs a lot of 02 and releases an abundance of co2 This results in the suffocation of fish and leading to more co2 being released by decomposers
Water Quality • water from a wastewater sewage plant should not exceed 1 mg/L of phosphorus • The safe level of drinking water is 5mg/l • Streams should not have more than.075mg/l Source #2 • The EPA states that stream water entering a lake should not exceed .05 mg/l
Conclusion • Our conclusion is that the water in our streams are extremely over polluted with phosphorus. The peak of phosphorus is in the summer.
Solution • Control runoff of fertilizers both from farm fields and yards. • Manage sewer water
