  2. Begin in Worship Sing Together—“Peace of Jesus” by Danny Belrose, p. 7 Prayer Read Together—Verse 4, p. 43 “Peace of Jesus boldly venture, unafraid of conflict’s face. Enter into life’s arena where the work of peace takes place. May formation in our spirits deepen meanings of God’s grace, Seen in living demonstration of the gospel’s full embrace.” What do these words mean?

  3. Chapter 5: Be Peace! • Read as a class Jim’s testimony of his conversation with Dr. Percy Karanjia. Feeding a nun, he said, “I have never felt such joy!” • Activity 1(p. 43)

The Community of Christ’s Mission of Peace/Shalom Shalomis described this way: “The central vision of world history in the Bible…that all creation is one, every creature in community with every other, living in harmony and security toward the joy and well-being of every other creature…it bears tremendous freight, the freight of a dream of God which resists all our tendencies to division, hostility, fear, drivenness, and misery.” —p. 44 (Walter Bruggeman)

  6. Chapter 5: Be Peace! • Read the scripture quote Luke 10:1–9 about the sending of the Seventy. (See page 45.) • Read the James E. Metzer quote beginning “Christ’s view of evangelism…” (See page 45.)

  7. Chapter 5: Be Peace! According to James Metzler, our message is embodied in one word— shalom. There is a three-step program: • “Eat” (build relationships) • “Heal” (serve needs) • “Speak” (explain; teach the kingdom of God)

  8. Chapter 5: Be Peace! Talk through the stories illustrating these three steps on pages 46–48. Activity 3: Eat, Heal, and Speak (p. 48) Do individually, then share with a neighbor. And then have a whole-class sharing.

  9. Invite into a Congregation • Your witness and ministry of “eat, heal, and speak” enables you to take the step of inviting your friend to participate in congregational life. • We want your friend to enter a healthy congregation. What does a healthy congregation look like? • Read page 49.
