The Rise of Solar Cycle 24: Properties and Understanding

This session explores the properties and significance of the rise of solar cycle 24, shedding light on our current understanding of the solar cycle. Topics include the dynamo action, magnetic flux emerging, hemispheric asymmetry, polar magnetic reversal, coronal holes, heliospheric changes, and the role of models. Join us for insightful discussions and poster presentations.

  1. The Rise of Solar Cycle 24: Magnetic Fields from the Dynamo to through the Photosphere and Corona and Connecting to the Heliosphere Wed-Thur Jul 13-14 Conveners: Joan Burkepile, Giuliana de Toma, Juan Fontenla, and Chuck Smith Cycle 24 follows the deepest minimum in about a century and has produced very low activity to date FOCUS: What are the properties of the rise of cycle 24 and what do they tell us about our current understanding of the solar cycle?

  2. Wed. at 9:15am Plenary Speaker: Leif Svalgaard Wed. Session 10am-1pm : Interior & Photosphere Invited Speakers: Frank Hill Gordon Petrie HMI Jul 7 2011

  3. l What can observations from the solar interior, and in particular the meridional flow and torsional oscillation, tell us about the dynamo action during the early rising phase of cycle 24? l How is magnetic flux emerging in cycle 24 and how does it compare to previous cycles? l What is the significance of the hemispheric asymmetry for the development of the new cycle? l Will the two hemispheres reach maximum at different times? l How close is the Sun to the polar magnetic reversal?

  4. Thur. Session all day: Corona & Heliosphere Invited Speakers: Janet Luhmann & Nathan Schwadron (we will continue discussion from last year session on connecting the corona to the heliosphere)

  5. l How have coronal holes evolved? What is effect of the weak polar magnetic field on the distribution of open flux at the Sun? l What is the open flux level in the heliosphere, how does this compare to the rise of Cycle 23, how do CMEs affect the open flux level? l What are the changes in the heliospheric morphology, and plasma and magnetic field properties since solar minimum? l How can models help us understand solar cycle changes in the heliosphere?

  6. Contributed Posters: The slow rise of solar cycle 24 (Harjit Ahluwalia) Torsional Oscillations and Coronal Activity (Richard Altrock) The slow rise of Cycle 24 as seen in Fe XIV (Richard Altrock) The Independency of the Solar Mass Loss Rate on Solar X-ray Luminosity and Activity Level (Ofer Cohen) Solar Prominence Eruptions and CMEs at the Start of Cycle 24 (Giuliana de Toma) Comparison between the Rising Phases of Solar Cycles 23 and 24 (Lan Jian) Subsurface kinetic helicity of flows near active regions (Rudolf Komm) Use of Single-Component Wind Speed in Rankine-Hugoniot Analysis of Interplanetary Shocks (Calum Meredith) CME and Reconnection Contributions to the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (Charles Smith) We invite the community to attend the session and bring 1-2 slides for discussion
