  1. Mercy Psalm 51

  2. Psalm 51 intro: Why Ask for Mercy? • What is the key characteristic of a Christian? • What should we be showing Dunoon? • What does mercy matter when we’ve been saved for a while? • David: • Had been following God for a long time • Had fought many battles • Decided he was doing all right

  3. Psalm 51:1 – God’s Mercy • Because I tried really hard... • Because I’m better than most... • ...According to my righteousness • None of these have hope. • God’s unending, unfailing love. • His great, endless compassion. • That is hope for everyone. (1 Timothy 1:15-17)

  4. Psalm 51:3-4 – Sins against God • All sin offends God. (Romans 3:23) • David didn’t have the whole Gospel, but he feared God. • Growing in faith is often seeing more of our sin, not less of it. • God is right to judge, it would not be a fault if He never forgave.

  5. Psalm 51:7-15 – outcomes of mercy • Cleansing from God brings joy. (v7-8) • If God forgives then who can judge us? • In His presence there is the ability to have joy restored and a heart sustained. (v11-12) • Out of being forgiven comes praise and hope for others (v13-14)

  6. Psalm 51:16-17 – Why brokenness? • God finds arrogance the worst thing. • In fact, the ability to do it without Him is the door to sin. • All the rules we keep are to do with running our lives better (without Him) • Brokenness is just accepting that we need Jesus. Totally.

  7. Psalm 51: The Key! • If God is good to me because I am righteous, what would it take to lose His favour? • If God is good to me because He is loving and forgiving, what would it take to lose His favour? • Living in His mercy gives confidence (because He does not fail), praise (because He is so generous), joy (because I can’t lose), hope for others (because He can reach anyone), freedom (because nothing loses our hope).

  8. Psalm 51 Psalm 51 What does mercy mean? And grace? What made David pray like this? Where had it started? Why should we see sins as an offence to God not men? Would God be unfair to punish you? What is the opposite of brokenness and contrition? Why do people not respond to those who are ‘good living’? What are the outcomes of a heart that relies on God only? What does mercy mean? And grace? What made David pray like this? Where had it started? Why should we see sins as an offence to God not men? Would God be unfair to punish you? What is the opposite of brokenness and contrition? Why do people not respond to those who are ‘good living’? What are the outcomes of a heart that relies on God only?
