Multiply and Divide Integers

Multiply and Divide Integers. 7 th Grade math Octo ber , 2012. Multiplying Integers. Easy, breezy, lemon, squeezy !!. Remember : Multiplication is repeated addition. So, 4 •2 is equivalent to 2+2+2+2 (4 groups of 2). Model the following problem on the number line: 4 • 2.

  1. Multiply and Divide Integers 7th Grade math October, 2012

  2. Multiplying Integers • Easy, breezy, lemon, squeezy!!

  3. Remember: Multiplication is repeated addition. So, 4 •2 is equivalent to 2+2+2+2 (4 groups of 2) Model the following problem on the number line: 4 • 2

  4. Remember: Multiplication is repeated addition. So, -3 • 2 is equivalent to -3 + -3 (2 groups of -3) Model the following problem on the number line: -3 • 2

  5. Model the multiplication problem on the number line. 3 • -2 =

  6. Model multiplying integers on the number line. - 2 • 4 =

  7. Model multiplying integers on the number line. 3 • - 3 =

  8. “Multiplying Integers” Notes- Cut out and paste in notebook

  9. “Develop a Rule” Activity

  10. So, What’s the Rule? • If the factors have the same sign, your product is POSITIVE. • If the factors have a different sign, your product is NEGATIVE. SAME SIGN = POSTITIVE DIFFERENT SIGNS = NEGATIVE

  11. Multiplying integers • -3 x 8 = 2. -12 • 5 = • 3. 42 • -7 4. - 7 x -15 = • 5. -11 (- 8) = 6. (-4) (-5) (-8) = • 7. 47 • 2 = 8. 3 (-2) • 4 = • 9. -3 (- 6) =

  12. Independent Practice • Textbook • Page 109 - #1 – 13 • Check as a class • Additional Practice: • If needed, Page 110 - #14-27 • Mastery, Integer Maze

  13. Dividing integers • Fact Families: • Using multiplication and division, show the fact families for the following problems. 8, 2, 16 3, 9, 27 4, 5, 20

  14. “Develop a Rule” Use your “Fact Family” organizer to develop a rule for dividing signed numbers. 1. - 6 (4) = 4 (- 6) = 2. 7 x (-3) = (-3) x 7 = 3. - 9 • - 4 = - 4 • - 9 =

  15. Dividing integers • Cut out the house you have not used. • Glue it into notebook. • Let’s work with the following numbers to complete a fact family house. • 8 • -3 = • What rule did you develop?

  16. So, What’s the Rule? • If the dividend and divisor have the same sign, your quotient is POSITIVE. • If the dividend and divisor have a different sign, your quotient is NEGATIVE. SAME SIGN = POSTITIVE DIFFERENT SIGNS = NEGATIVE (LOOK FAMILIAR?!?!?!!)

  17. Practice Problems • 55 ÷ (- 5) • -16 ÷ (-4) • 32 ÷ - 8 • -63 ÷ (-7) • -81 ÷ 9

  18. Independent Practice • Page 116 - #1-8
