  2. Flying Doves and Berettas: The John Woo Guns You Might Find on GunBroker.com Like the flying doves motif found in many of director John Woo films, there are certain firearms that often show up in Woo’s movies. There is the director’s favorite, the Beretta 92F, but plenty of others. Because Woo’s films like A Better Tomorrow, Hard Boiled, and Hard Target came out in the 1980s and ‘90s, you can often find these guns or variants available as used guns for sale or at auction on GunBroker.com. If you are a John Woo fan, here are the guns you should add to your collection. Beretta 92F and Taurus PT92, Dual-Wielding! If it is a Beretta 9mm, it is probably in John Woo’s movies. It is well-known the Beretta 92F is his favorite handgun, and its popularity was helped with actor Chow Yun-fat dual-wielding the then-new handgun in A Better Tomorrow. Variants include the 92SB and the 92FS. When Woo directed Mission: Impossible 2, the 92FS Brigadier was one of the main firearms used by Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. Interestingly, in Hard Boiled, which cemented the Chow Yun-fat-dual- wielding-Berettas image, the Taurus PT92 is often used instead. It is the Brazilian version of the 92FS, differentiated by a frame-mounted safety on the Taurus instead of the slide-mounted safety of the Beretta.

  3. HK MP5, Submachine Gun Action Woo is also fond of submachine guns and, in particular the Heckler & Koch MP5 family. The two that crop up most frequently are the MP5A3 and the MP5K. The MP5A3 is the standard version of the submachine gun, while the MP5K eliminates the stock and shortens the A3’s already short barrel, making it much more compact. They also have a handgrip not featured in the A series. The Iconic IMI Uzi Quite a few Uzis appear in Woo’s early action films. From the full-size to the compact, and even the Micro Uzi, it takes second place in non-Berettas to Woo’s love of the MP5 line. The Mini and Micro both tend to have a swing-out stock, while the full-sized version has a segmented stock that collapses. The Uzi was among the first firearms to use a telescoping bolt, allowing for the mag to be housed in the grip and making the frame shorter. It was initially made for the Israeli Defense Force and was famously wielded by Secret Service Agent Robert Wanko while protecting then-President Ronald Reagan during the 1981 assassination attempt on Reagan. The Classic Mossberg 500 Shotgun Like the Beretta 92F and MP5 line, Woo consistently uses the Mossberg 500 line for shotguns. From the 500 Cruiser to the 590, the workhorse of a shotgun is a favorite of Chow Yun-fat’s Tequila Yuen. The Thompson Center Arms Contender for Villains This odd single-shot pistol seems to be what Woo uses to show villains. In both Hard Target and Hard Boiled, villains use the Thompson to shoot and blow things up, which is obviously an exaggeration as it uses regular 45 70 cartridges.
