StateNets Applications & Content Focus Group Update

This update provides information on advanced applications and content across StateNets, promoting network-enabled applications that support research, teaching, and learning. Examples include open source tools, podcasting, educational gaming, Skype-type applications, and more. The goal is to share content and ideas between networks and demonstrate the value of research and education networks.

  3. The real power of our state networks is the communication avenue it provides the communities we serve.

  4. Content is the fundamental product or building block of research, teaching, learning and service. It is clearly the primary asset that travels across the network among the community. Applications enable and support the delivery and exchange of content across our networked communities. 

  5. Goals • Share information about advanced applications and content from our own StateNets, and across represented StateNets.  • Promote network enabled applications that support research, teaching and learning.

  6. Examples? • Open source tools • Podcasting - ITunesU • Educational gaming • Skype-type applications • Remote instrumentation / Simulations • Peer to Peer applications • Open Student Television Network (OSTN) • Research Channel / Annenberg Media • MySpace / Facebook • YouTube • Educational gaming • Wikis of all sorts of kinds • Sakai • Second Life • moodle / sloodle • Others? - Educational Brokerage

  7. Why? • A very good differentiator for our networks • Build on marketing efforts • Some could turn into potential services - I'm hoping • Share content and ideas between our networks • Demonstrate the value of research and education networks.
