  1. What’s the Difference Between Wi-Fi Extender and Wi-Fi Repeater? Wi-fi technology has come a long way over the last decade. We have moved from single device connecting routers to the ones that can support hundreds of devices while providing a decent speed. The speed, however, also depends on your wifi data plan. There are instances when you receive a good speed from Internet Service Provider, but connected devices are real slow. Concrete walls, dead zones, and old router could be the reason for the problem. There are best mesh network system available to solve the issues. But, today we will be discussing about two other technologies - wi-fi repeater and wi-fi extender. Wi-Fi Repeater The device connects to wi-fi network wirelessly to re-broadcast signals to a larger area of the house where connect is poor or signals are weak. A wi-fi repeater is easy to set up and doesn’t need a wired network port. Wi-fi repeater can be plugged into the outlet, but it should be placed in a location that has wifi signals. If the repeater is plugged in an area where wifi connection is weak, it will be able to broadcast only half the strength. The device isn’t recommend to boost wifi signals over long distance. Wi-Fi Extender The device extends the network to cover more area. It might be a little difficult to set up, but once done, you can move the device to any place where better wifi signals are required. An extender boosts the range of the wifi signals and make them stronger. A wi-fi extender is a good option for dead zone and it doesn’t reduce the bandwidth from thick walls and radio waves. How are the two technologies different? • A wifi repeater gets the signals from router and re-broadcasts them to areas where signal strength is weak. An extender, on the other hand, extends the range of network coverage area making it bigger. • A wifi repeater is more cost-effective than wifi extender. • Setting up a wifi repeater is easier than the wifi extender. Both the technologies have their pros and cons. If you have an old router, it is better to install an advanced home router with content filtering instead of using wifi repeater and wifi extender. This will be a better and permanent solution to weak signal problems.
