  2. The Beginning of Thriller. • Influenced widely by Film Noir in the early years, till the 1970’s, in movies such as ‘Psycho’. • Featured many forms and conventions of the genre, including crime and strong female characters.

  3. Forms and Conventions of Thriller. • Dramatic scores to built suspense. • Can begin with a sense of normalcy. • Normally contains some kind of chase. • Commonly a character’s life is in danger. • A lack of time to complete a task. • Reaches a dramatic conclusion.

  4. Subgenres • Horror: ‘The Amityville Horror’ • Psychological Thriller: ‘The Sixth Sense’ • Action: ‘Wanted’ • Crime: ‘Collateral’ • Political Thrillers: ‘Frost/Nixon’

  5. ‘Psycho.’ • Psychological thriller. • Directed by Alfred Hitchcockin 1960. • Pioneered the way for more modern day Thrillers, stemming away from Film Noir. • Made famous by it’s distinctive score, which soon became a convention of modern thriller.

  6. Alfred Hitchcock English filmmaker who pioneered many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genre. Hitchcock moved to Hollywood after success in U.K with silent films and ‘talkies’. Directed more than 50 films in a career that spanned six decades. Most famous films include ‘The Birds’, ‘Rear Window’, and ‘Psycho’. Shaped the future of cinema by taking control of artistic aspects of their movies. Influenced many future directors.
