Theatre Etiquette • Going to a play is a special experience, one that you will remember for a long time. • Everyone in the audience has been looking forward to seeing the performance. • The actors and production team have put in many long hours memorizing lines and learning their characters. • So…it requires different behavior than say, a pep assembly or a rock concert. • When you are seated, walk all the way down the row, and it in the last available seat. Stopping and sitting in the middle of a row, causes people to have to crawl over you. • Do not crawl over seats to be seated.

This is not a movie theater: you can see and hear the actors, and they can see and hear you. • Lights will dim just before a performance..show your knowledge by sitting quietly and calmly from this moment on. Do not howl or whoop when it gets dark, at best applaud for the start of the show. • Never leave once the performance begins…intermission is provided for restroom breaks. • Please do not talk or whisper. Actors can hear the audience and you might make them lose their focus and cause injury. Or, they could stop and ask you to be quiet. EMBARASSING! • For the same reason, keep body movements to a minimum. Never get up and move around.

7. Other ways to show that you are an experienced audience… • Never talk to the actor or yell out anything. • Don’t bring candy or gum or liquids into the auditorium. • Don’t stand up to leave until the actors have taken their bows (curtain call) at the end. • Show your appreciation by clapping. The actors love to hear applause. This shows how much you enjoyed the performance!! Save the “whooping” for the football game.
