  2. Purpose of IAW To support a school in the process of establishing and sustaining effective Coherent Instruction and Supportive Learning Environment Systems The Goal of IAW Impact student learning by collaborating with a school to improve instruction

  3. IAW Overview • The IAW review process provides detailed information for a school on its progress toward full implementation of Georgia’s Systems of Continuous Improvement (GSCI), especially in the systems of Coherent Instruction and Supportive Learning Environment. • An IAW is a review that a school or district can choose to implement to help with its improvement efforts. • Any Georgia school can request an IAW review from GaDOE or RESA, or use the review tool to self-assess progress on GSCI.

  4. The Five GSCI Systems • Coherent Instruction • Effective Leadership • Professional Capacity • Family and Community Engagement • Supportive Learning Environment (Note: The five systems of Georgia’s Systems ofContinuous Improvement (GSCI) contain a total of 22 structures.)

  5. Coherent Instruction System • Planning for Quality Instruction (CI-1) • Delivering Quality Instruction (CI-2) • Monitoring Student Progress (CI-3) • Refining the Instructional System (CI-4) (Note: The IAW focuses on CI-1, CI-2, and CI-3.)

  6. Supportive Learning Environment System • Maintaining Order and Safety (SLE-1) • Developing and Monitoring a Tiered System of Supports (SLE-2) • Ensuring a Student Learning Community (SLE-3) (Note: The IAW focuses on SLE-1 and SLE-3.)

  7. IAW Stages • Part I - Determining Current Level of Instructional Practice • Led by School and District Effectiveness (SDE) Team or Trained Staff • Part II- Building Effective Instructional Practice • Led by school administrative team

  8. Part I - Determining Current Level of Instructional Practice Led by School and District Effectiveness (SDE) Team or trained staff • Process • Observation Protocol • Support to School from Protocol

  9. Items needed for an IAW Review • Copies of the teacher roster, master schedule, school map, and bell schedule to the APAS at least two weeks prior to the review. • Reserved room at the school for the day to conduct an orientation, a debriefing, and the development of the IAW summary report.

  10. GSCI IAW Tools • GSCI Classroom Observation Form • GSCI IAW Calculated Tally Report • GSCI IAW Protocol Summary • GSCI Observation Individual Tally Form • Instructional Awareness Walk Team Agenda • Instructional Awareness Walk Request Form

  11. Process • Conduct classroom observations. • Summarize the data and establish next steps. • Present data and next steps to principal. • Schedule date for follow-up with another protocol implementation visit.

  12. Observation Protocol • Observations focus on the GSCI Coherent Instruction and Supportive Learning Environment systems. • SDE team or trained staff observes multiple classrooms. • Observations are 10 - 15 minutes in length. • Observations are confidential and results are not to be shared with individual teachers. • SDE team or trained staff collates the data and develops target areas.

  13. Comments and Target Actions • Comments (including commendations) are written collaboratively for Coherent Instruction and Supportive Learning Environment Systems/Structures as applicable. • Target actions are written collaboratively for Systems/Structures as applicable.

  14. Part II - Building Effective Instructional Practice Led by school administrative team • Review all data from the IAW • Focus on student learning • Align to the district • Define Coherent Instructional System • Monitoring • Reflection

  15. Summary of IAW Protocol • An IAW team will conduct classroom observations using a tool focused on the Coherent Instruction and Supportive Learning Environment structures. • After reviewing all the IAW observation data, the IAW team will score three structures in Coherent Instruction (CI-1, CI-2, & CI-3) and two structures in Supportive Learning Environment (SLE-1 & SLE-3) and rate the school’s progress on each as either Exemplary, Operational, Emerging, or Not Evident. • IAW team writes comments and target actions for the school.
