The Scientific Method http://to55er.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/0511-0712-2816-5549_crazy_mad_scientist_clipart_image1.jpg
BORING!! Not this again!!! WHY?WHY? Who cares! http://www.usm.edu/pr/releases/2006/may/images/bored.jpg This has nothing to do with my life! http://firstchoicedriversed.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/excited_child.332101512_std.jpg
NO!!!!! What if his “cure” is really dangerous but he promises that his experiments showed that it works? Dr. Factoria has found the cure for Cancer!! What if Dr. Factoria can’t explain how he did his experiment? What if he wasn’t organized and didn’t keep good track of his results? http://www.bromfordgroup.co.uk/image/Newspaper_20icon_1.jpg Should we just take his word for it that it works?
SO Why do we use the Scientific Method???? To be able to repeat an experiment over and over again -makes sure results are correct -helps check for mistakes -protects people from “bad” science http://solitaryking.com/images/question_clipart.gif
What are the steps? Ask a Question Research Hypothesis Procedure/method Results -Qualitative and Quantitative Conclusion
Does tooth paste REALLY keep your teeth clean? Why is the sky blue and not orange? THE Question: What are you trying to learn more about? Could bleach be a cure for AIDS? Does your DNA control if you get cancer? What is in the center of the earth? http://www.math.hmc.edu/~tucker/math104/graphics/thinking-cap.gif
Research: Gather info on your topic -Has someone already answered this question? -What do I need to know to design an experiment to answer this question? http://www.philosophy.leeds.ac.uk/Research/books.jpg
Make a Hypothesis NOT an educated GUESS!!! It is a possible explanation that can be tested Always written in an “IF” “THEN” statement IF James slaps Jennie THEN he will break his hand. If leaf color change is related to temperature , then exposing plants to low temperatures will result in changes in leaf color NO If I play the lottery, then I will get rich Chocolate may cause pimples. NO
Procedure/Method Written and carefully followed step-by-step experiment Always has -a control group -a independent variable -a dependent variable http://www.clipartof.com/images/clipart/xsmall2/12192_seriously_mad_scientist_with_large_bug_eyes_holding_test_tubes_and_standing_by_eyeballs_in_a_lab.jpg http://www.super-science-fair-projects.com/image-files/kayla.gif
Who makes your decisions? Independent? YOU do! http://peoplesbike.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/pointing-finger.jpg
Independent Variable (IV) The factor or thing that the scientist purposely changes or manipulates In other words, the factor YOU change “The cause” http://blog.sustainablog.org/wp-content/files/2008/05/change.jpg http://s3.causes.com/photos/cC/J7/sL/EH/Og/KP/8w/TkH.jpg
Dependent Variable (DV) The factor or thing in the experiment that changes because of the IV IV “The effect” DV http://www.deepermind.com/images/CauseProcessEffect.jpg
IV Medicine DV Temperature Starts at 102.3 F http://wpcontent.answcdn.com/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f4/Infuuszakjes.jpg/250px-Infuuszakjes.jpg 5 g medicine 99.3 F 1 g medicine 105 F http://www.picturesof.net/_images_300/Sick_Boy_In_Bed_Royalty_Free_Clipart_Picture_090513-150630-222053.jpg
Jim wanted to see if sugar had any affect on bread DV: The more sugar added the bigger the bread load got IV: Jim added different amounts of sugar. 1g 2g 3g http://whatscookingamerica.net/Cookie/CookiePhotos/PowderedSugar2.jpg
Lori wanted to see if her new shoes made her run faster. With her old shoes Lori could run 1 mile in 6 minutes. With her new shows Lori could run 1 mile in 8 minutes. IV? Shoes http://www.besportier.com/archives/salomon-xa-pro-3d-xcr-trail-running-shoes.jpg DV? Time it takes to run a mile http://bawandinesh.name/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/020-running.png
Fred thinks if thinks that the more leaves a maple tree has the more Maple syrup they will produce. IV? # of leaves http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/pictures/1000/nahled/1-1192373997.jpg DV? Amount of syrup http://www.wintergreenstudios.com/Pics/Maple_syrup.jpg
Control group This is the group that stays the same. It allows for a comparison to make sure the experiment was run correctly. http://olegshilo.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/bom-compare.jpg
Amanda thinks that if plants are exposed to classical music then they will grow faster. She puts one plant in her bedroom with the usual noises and the other plant she puts in her brother’s room which is exactly like hers except that there is classical music all day long. Control group? IV? DV? Fred believes that if Cows are given Pepsi to drink instead of water they will make more milk. The cow given Pepsi dies. BUT so does the cow that is given water! Is it the Pepsi's fault the cow died?
Results Data: The info collected during the experiment http://s410.photobucket.com/albums/pp190/FindStuff2/Art/Oil%20Paintings/?action=view¤t=simpsons-super-oil-painting.jpg¤ttag=homer+simpson+oil+painting
Conclusion After examining the data did it support your hypothesis? One experiment will not “Prove” a hypothesis Takes many years and many experiments to “Prove” a hypothesis The data in this experiment…. Supported the hypothesis Did not support the hypothesis OR http://images.clipartof.com/small/16426-Orange-Person-Shouting-Information-Through-A-Megaphone-Clipart-Illustration-Graphic.jpg
Now go forth and do good Experiments!!! http://wildwildweather.com/forecastblog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/einstein_cartoon1-full-336x420.jpg
