  5. Cost of College • California Community Colleges are FREE! • CSU—estimated cost $22,000 per year (including tuition, books, room, board, personal expenses) • UC—estimated cost $35,000 per year (including tuition, books, room, board, personal expenses) • Private—estimated cost $50,000+

  6. Community College SAT/ACT is not required MJC is FREE for two years if you enroll in at least 12 units per semester and submit the FAFSA. Sign up for Summer/Fall Application workshop October 22 1&2, 3&4, 6&7 in the library. It is FREE to attend MJC while in high school. Can get Guaranteed Transfer (TAG) to 6 UC’s!

  7. CSU/UC A-G requirements: A. History/Social Science – 2 years B. English – 4 years C. Mathematics – 3 years (4 years recommended) D. Laboratory Science – 2 years (3 years recommended) E. Language Other Than English – 2 years (3 years recommended) F. Visual and Performing Arts- 1 year G. College Preparatory Elective- 1 year

  8. CSU • Apply Oct 1-Nov 30 • Sign up for the CSU application workshop on Oct 7th 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4thperiod in the library. • $70 per campus (fee waivers available online) • No personal statement or letters of recommendation required!

  9. University of California • Apply Nov 1-Nov 30 (can start application now) • Sign up to attend the UC application workshop on Oct. 8th (2nd 3rd and 4th period in the library)., • $70 per campus—fee waivers available online • One application for all campuses

How to Apply: • Apply online to CSU/UC/Common Application • https://www2.calstate.edu/applyfor CSU • www.universityofcalifornia.edu/applyfor UC • www.commonapp.org • There are prompts, checks for errors, drop down menus, tech support, etc. • Many private schools will have their own application on the Common Application. Students applying to private schools must attend the MANDATORY Common App Workshop on September 17th- 3rd or 4th period in the library.

  11. What do Colleges look at??? • Grades • Challenging Courses • Test Scores • Community Service (UC’s/Privates) • Leadership (UC’s/Privates) • Personal Statement (UC’s/Privates)

  12. Which Schools Should I Apply To? • You should apply to a variety of schools: • Dream School (Reach) • TargetSchool (Fairly Likely to be Accepted • Safety School (A Sure Thing) • Check the Net Price Calculator on each school’s website for cost!

  13. College Visits -Visit colleges you are interested in -You are allowed 3 days of excused absences for college visits. Permission given by Mr. Sherwoodin the Counseling office- Give 2 weeks notice for approval. -Sign up to attend college visits in the Career Center.

  15. The Waiting Game • Students will find out sometime in March for UC’s/privates whether or not they were admitted. • CSU’s have rolling admissions. • Students will let the colleges know by May 1 which school they plan to attend.

It gives students ideas of different careers they may want to pursue • Single sign in now from student devices!

  21. ACT/SAT Testing • All testing must be completed by December. (San Diego State, Long Beach and Cal Poly want testing done by November). Don’t forget to send scores! • If applying to CSU’s only, take SAT/ACT without the writing. -If applying to UC’s take SAT Reasoning with writing and/or ACT with writing. SAT Subject Tests are optional. Only recommended for math, engineering or science majors.Fee waivers available for students on free or reduced lunch.

AP Classes • AP classes offer the most rigorous curriculum. • If student passes the test in May with a score of 3 or better they can earn college credit at most universities. • Cost is $95.00 per test. You can start paying money to the SBO in $20 increments. • If you receive free or reduced lunch the cost of testing is $5 per test.

  23. NCAA Clearinghouse • Must apply for the Clearinghouse if planning to play sports at a Division I or II school • Must meet core requirements (16 core courses) • Division 1 GPA-2.3 minimum • Cost is $80(fee waivers available) • Apply now: https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/

Financial Aid • Complete the FAFSA (even if you think you won’t qualify) between Oct 1-March 2. www.fafsa.gov • Enochs will file Cal Grant GPA electronically (looks at college GPA—10th and 11th grades)— • March 2 is the deadline to file FAFSA in order to qualify for a Cal Grant. • Make sure you apply for the 2020-21 school year!

  25. Financial Aid • You will be able to submit the FAFSA with your 2018 tax return information. • www.fafsa.gov • Apply between October 1-March 2. • Check out the Net Price Calculator on the website of any college your child is considering! Very accurate estimate of what you would pay.

  28. Middle Class Scholarship • Available to students attending UC/CSU • If your family earns up to $177,000 and has assets less than $177,000 per year you may be eligible for 40% off tuition and system wide fees. UC:$5,052 CSU: $2,298 28

  29. Scholarships • The Scholarship Bulletin is available online on the Enochs website. The bulletin is updated monthly. Click on the counseling office link and you will find a link to the College and Scholarship Bulletin. I will send out on Remind as well. • There is a great scholarship feature on Naviance! • Parents employment is a good place to search • Colleges/Universities have their own scholarshipswww.goingmerry.comand www.collegeboard.org are good websites to search for national scholarships.
