  2. Why ? • Modern Chinese formal language, including both spoken and written patterns, is used widely in all aspects of society. From government documents, newspapers, magazines and academic research tobusiness agreements, company contracts, and speeches and reports and so on, mastery of formal Chinese is absolutely essential. Whether spoken or written, formal Chinese is very much a part of modern society, and should be an important part of the education of any student of Chinese.
