  1. Moon Phases and Shadows Log 8 Debrief

  2. Rotation • The spinning of a planet, moon, sun, or other object, around its axis.

  3. Orbit • The path an object in space follows as it revolves around another object, such as Earth around the sun or a satellite around Earth.

  4. Altitude • Altitude is the distance an object appears to be above the horizon. The angle is measured up from the closest point on the horizon.

  5. Azimuth • Azimuth is the angular distance along the horizon to the location of the object. It is measured from north toward the east along the horizon.

  6. Shadow • An area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. A shadow occupies all the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it.

  7. Moon Phases 1. The diagram models Earth and the moon in two positions of its orbit. The arrows indicate the direction of light from the sun. In your answer, identify what phase of the moon will be seen from Earth when the moon is in position X. Describe or draw what that phase looks like from Earth. Indicate in your description or drawing what portion of the moon is lit or is not lit. Then, identify what phase of the moon will be seen from Earth when the moon is in position Z.   8. Shadows 2. Students observe that the length of the shadow of a flagpole varies throughout the year. They measure and diagram the flagpole’s shadow in spring, summer and fall at mid-afternoon. The students’ diagrams are shown. In your answer, describe or draw what the flagpole’s shadow will look like at mid-afternoon in the winter, December 21.
