  8. Their rulers strictly controlled outside contact, and were suspicious of outside technology. In isolation, their innovation slowed as the rest of the world became more connected and modernized. http://z.about.com/d/ancienthistory/1/5/u/e/2/Yellow_Emperor.jpg

  9. By the 19th century, China was poor and backward. The world had forgotten that China was ever advanced. http://listverse.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/plowfinished.jpg.jpeg

  10. By 1949, when the Communist Revolution shook China, 8 years of fighting with Japan plus 4 years of civil war left China with a totally disrupted economy. http://www.flickr.com/photos/zaruka/3663310246/

  11. Chairman Mao, along with the Chinese Communist leadership, tried through the years to modernize China’s economy. http://www.flickr.com/photos/zaruka/3556212187/

  12. But by 1977, China was still primarily an agricultural society and their grain production was still at 1955 levels. http://www.flickr.com/photos/45507342@N00/285517684/

  14. Addto your vocabulary: SEZ (Special Economic Zones): Areas in countries that possess special economic regulations that are different from other areas in the same country.

  15. Shenzhen was China’s first Special Economic Zone. http://1.media.tumblr.com/QZFL2v6hvpvcfbkqeo5kgIJ8o1_400.jpg

  16. The SEZs are worlds apart from rural China. http://www.travel-hongkong-attractions.com/images/shenzhen-lowu.jpg http://www.ruralchina.au.dk/data/22758710/1421042/kedu.jpg

  17.  No tax during start-up years before making a profit and reduced taxes in the next four years  excellent infrastructure  economic freedom from China’s command economy  greatly reduced import/export tariffs  large available workforce  low local wages

  18. “Since the average wage for a Chinese factory worker is 92¢ an hour and US wages are about 23 times higher, millions of US jobs have been lost and transferred to China.” -- Moneyshow.com, Friday, 03 June 2005, Gold, China, and Resources http://www.karenceliafox.com/Traveling/China/uploaded_images/image_china_factory-788572.jpg

  19. But in fact, millions of rural people come to the SEZs for work. http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2007/08_02/055Mattelfactory_468x310.jpg

  20. This is most obvious before the Chinese New Year, when workers crowd the trains to travel home. http://pub.creaders.net/upload_files/20090107175149.bmp

  21. While Chinese workers value the jobs in the SEZs, they work long hours for low wages. http://sunriseworldenterprises.com/china-factory.jpg

  22. But even working for $100/month, a Chinese worker can save money and send some home to family. http://s3.images.com/huge.71.356303.JPG

  23. It is easier for them to save money, because factory worker typically get housing in dormitories or small apartments. And many factories provide two meals a day. http://www.urbanphoto.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/shenzhen04.jpg

  24. The days are long and the pay is not great, but workers are using these jobs to build their futures. Many young women work 2-3 years in a factory, then return to their hometown, use their money to start a small business, get married and live out their lives. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3073/3009516045_0c7fd883c5.jpg

  25. But China is not content to simply be the world’s manufacturing plant. So they are working to bring high-value jobs to China. http://a.abcnews.com/images/WN/abc_safety_lab_071030_mn.jpg

  26. Intel’s most advanced microprocessors are now being manufactured and tested in Chengdu, China. http://img.hexus.net/v2/internationalevents/idf2007/idf_large_3.jpg

  27. Microsoft has opened a research center in Beijing, China. http://decision.csl.illinois.edu/~yima/image/MSRA_Students.JPG

  28. Google has also opened a research center in Beijing. http://www.thejakartapost.com/files/images/google_0.jpg

  29. China is working hard to build its future as part of the global economy. http://www.billfrymire.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/global-economy-technology-telecommunications-1000.jpg

  30. Why do we find that many of the products we use everyday are made in China or Asian countries?

  31. How is this impacting our economy and how might it impact our economy in the future? http://alibabauser.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/china-economy.gif
