  2. Essay- a short work of nonfiction that deals with a single subject There are two kinds of essays: Tells a story Provides factual information • Narrative • (literary) • Tells true stories about • people and places • Expository • (informational) • Explains facts • and ideas Informative Nonfiction Expository Nonfiction

  3. What is TEXT STRUCTURE ? That's a good question! Text structure is the organization of narrative and expository text What does THAT mean ?

  4. Text structure is simply how the text is “built” or set up on the page. Look at the example below: Expository Essay Organization Introduction main idea Body Conclusion

  5. Some examples of TEXT STRUCTURE are: • PROBLEM/SOLUTION • COMPARE/CONTRAST • CAUSE/EFFECT • SEQUENCE • ORDER OF IMPORTANCE • MAIN IDEA/SUPPORTING DETAILS

  6. NOW…for a little brainstorming Directions: Using your brain's dictionary, write your definition for the following words beneath today's warm-up: TONE MOOD

  7. The mood of a literary work is the feeling that a writer wants the reader to have while reading. MOOD = ME HOW DOES THE AUTHOR WANT ME TO FEEL? A good way to remember this: Teenagers are moody and think about themselves a lot of the time MOODY ME or MOOD = ME Or sing “Me, Me, Me,…moody me”

  8. TONE is the attitude that the writer takes toward the reader or the subject A good way to remember this: AttiTUDE = TONE • The tone a writer uses can be: • Sarcastic • Cynical • Concerned • Well-informed • Tender • Serious • And many other adjectives TONE CAN HELP YOU DETERMINE THE AUTHOR'S MESSAGE (or main idea)! What does the author want me to know?

  9. The author's message is also conveyed through • WORD CHOICE • In order to emphasize importance, • an author may use: • Signal words • Repetition of words and phrases • Exaggeration • Descriptive language • Alliteration WORD CHOICE CONTRIBUTES TO MEANING!

  10. NEXT: Small groups activity (I will pick the groups) Today's Task: PART 1 Take turns reading “America the Not-So-Beautiful” aloud (remember to use your best Andy Rooney tone to help convey your message) Highlight words or phrases that are repeated for emphasis Circle TONE words or phrases (words indicating author’s attitude) Star MOOD words or phrases (words that have an impact on you)

  11. PART 2 After reading the essay “America the Not-So-Beautiful”: Work as a group to complete the “Chart for Non-fiction Article Analysis” Ask me if you have questions about how to fill out the chart, but make sure you ask everyone in your group first! Someone might know something that you do not.

  12. PART 3 Now that you understand Rooney’s message: *Determine (as a group) what the “BIG PROBLEM” is… (Example: chemical disposal, excessive packaging, bad habits by lazy humans, etc.) *Brainstorm with your group to try to figure out the “best” solution. Remember, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX! You may create an invention! *Write your group proposal on a sheet of lined paper. Don't forget to explain your proposal in writing. *Illustrateyour proposed solution DON'T FORGET TO WRITE ALL GROUP MEMBERS' NAMES, CLASS# & DATE ON ALL PAPERS!

  13. I hope that Andy Rooney's message to you was a wake up call! This is a problem you cannot ignore. YOU ARE THE FUTURE!
