    7. What is the background? Magnetic Resonance has been an established laboratory measurement technique from the 1950’s and since the late 1980’s Refiners both in Europe and the States started to develop the technique as an online tool, Why? Simply it provides Hydrocarbon structural information, that is fluid independent and the NMR experiment does not require temperature or chemical pre-conditioning. How does it work? We investigate the behaviour 1H, nuclear spin, in a homogeneous magnetic field. A nucleas with spin gives rise to a small magnetic field, which is described as the Nuclear Magnetic Moment, a vector. We introduce the sample into the magnetic field. The result is the random orientation of the magnetic spins align. If we then give the sample a short duration RF pulse, at its resonance frequency, in this case circa 60 MHz, the spins will rotate by up to 900. Once the RF is stopped the spins will relax back to their original state. This relaxation time depends on the proton position within the hydrocarbon chain. A Fourier transform is performed to reveal the structural information and with the application of chemometrics we can obtain physical and chemical property predictions of interest. So the Crude (TBP, Yield, API, Sulphur) and key product qualities such as Kero (TBP, Flash, Freeze etc) are obtained. These provide robust measurements to enable a sustainable Optimisation and/or APC solution. So what are the differentiation features? What is the background?
