what is anorexia
What is anorexia?
  • Is a dangerous eating disorder where people purposely starve themselves to become thin.
  • Its characterized by refusal to maintain a healthy body weight, and an excessive fear of gaining weight
  • It is a serious mental illness with a high incidence of comorbidity and highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder
  • Anorexia is considered to be a psychological disorder

  • Rapid and dramatic weight loss
  • Obsession with fat content and calories
  • Scarring of the knuckles from placing fingers down the throat to force vomiting
  • Dieting despite being dangerously underweight or thin
  • Fear of gaining weight

  • Cultural pressures

Treatment for anorexia calls for a specific program that involves three main phases:

  • Restoring weight lost to severe dieting and purging.
  • After restoring weight lost psychotropic medication is used.
  • Treatment of psychological disturbances such as distortion of body image, low self esteem, and interpersonal conflicts.
  • Achieving long term remmission and rehabilitation, or full recovery.

What is bulimia?
  • Is also an eating disorder , its not as extreme as anorexia but still very serious psychological disorder. It’s the rapid and out of control eating, which may stop when the bulimic is interrupted or the stomach hurts from overextension, followed by forced vomiting due to the fear of gaining weight.

  • Dehydration caused by

frequent vomiting.

  • Enlarged glands in the neck

under the jaw line

  • Discolored teeth
  • Lack of control over eating
  • Consent, forced vomiting
  • Sore throat
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weakness and dizziness
  • Loss of menstrual periods
  • Ruptured stomach or esophagus
  • Low self-esteem: people who think of themselves as useless, worthless, and unattractive are at risk of bulimia
  • Poor body image: Media’s emphasis on beauty and thinness can lead to body dissatisfactions particularly in young women.
  • Major life changes: too much stress such as changes in puberty, going away, a break up ,,etc. , can cause bulimia.

  • People with anorexia starve themselves, avoid high- Calorie foods and exercise constantly.
  • People with bulimia eat large amounts of food, but they throw up soon after eating, or take laxatives or water pills to keep from gaining weight. People with bulimia don’t usually lose as much weight as people with anorexia.
