Description of illness • Bulimia is a life threating eating disorder in which a person eats a large amount of food then purges to get rid of the extra calories • Two different categories: Purging Bulimia and Nonpurging bulimia • Purging Bulimia is self-induce vomiting , or miss using laxatives • Nonpurging Bulimia is using other methods to get rid of calories and prevent gaining weight

  3. STATISTICS • Among western women between 15 and 24 years old, 1 and 50 are bulimic. • 90% to 98% of people with bulimia are females • 64% are in a normal weight range • Bulimia begins most likely begins in teenage years

  4. SYMPTOMS • Constant fear of gaining weight • Always being preoccupied with your body weight and shape • Feeling you cant control your eating habits • Forcing yourself to exercise to much of vomit after eating • Eating so much until your in pain or discomfort

Treatment • Psychotherapy- to help you identify unhealthy behaviors and replace them with healthy behaviors • Medication- antidepressants to help reduce symptoms, along with psychotherapy • Nutrition education- get an underweight bulimic back to a healthy weight • Hospitalization- severe forms of this disease may need to be treated in a hospital

  6. TIPs • Remind yourself what a healthy weight is for you • Continue therapy sessions to manage stress levels and learning positive ways to cope with them • Look for positive role models • Find activities and hobbies to distract you
