  1. Transformation Grant:LMC Math and English

  2. What have we transformed? ●  The use of high school performance for placement (i.e. cumulative GPA, course grades, non- cognitive measures) for placement ●  Co-requisite remediation or shortening of developmental sequence ● Curricular innovations including creation of math pathways to align with students’ field of study.

  3. Math Placement Reform Data from Long Beach CC (n=7,000 students):

  4. LMC Math Placement • Students who complete HS Algebra 2 or higher: eligible for transfer-level math (Statistics, Precalculus, Applied Calculus) • Students who have a 2.8+ GPA (but did not complete HS Algebra 2): eligible for Intermediate Algebra or Statistics • Any student: Co-requisite course + transfer-level math or Accelerated Algebra

  5. Impact of assessment change -- Math

  6. LMC English Placement • Students with 3.0 GPA: eligible for transfer-level course (Engl 100 or Engl 100/100S) • Students with 2.6 GPA: eligible for transfer-level course (Engl 100/100S) • Any student: Engl 95

  7. Impact of assessment change -- English

  8. Two semesters or lessMath Created and expanded pathways for any student to complete transfer level math requirement: • Accelerated Algebra + Transfer-level math course (2 semesters) • Co-requisite support & Transfer-level math course (1 semester) In Fall 2019, all students will have direct access to transfer-level math (Statistics, Precalculus or Applied Calculus), either with or without concurrent support.

  9. Two semesters or lessEnglish One pathway (one or two courses) for any student to complete transfer level englishrequirement: • Accelerated english+ Transfer-level english course (either Engl 100 OR Engl 100/100S) (2 semesters) • Co-requisite support & Transfer-level math course • Transfer-level english course (1 semester)

  10. Relevant Curriculum (a) Give an interval to describe Steph’s typical performance in a game. (b) What is the probability that Steph hits within this interval during a game? Curriculum by LMC Statistics faculty

  11. Non-credit basic skills math • Basic Math & Study Skills (Math 4) • Algebra & Arithmetic Skills (Math 20) These courses are: • Open access • Free to students • Students who complete Algebra & Arithmetic Skills are eligible to enroll in Intermediate Algebra

  12. Contextualized CTE math ETEC 009 and PTEC 009 • Program-specific math courses: math in the context of electrical or process technology • Meets AA degree math requirements • Co-developed with the math department but taught by CTE faculty

  13. Math Completion in One-Year Data compiled by Myra Snell (LMC) and Rolando Valdez (DO)

  14. Math Completion in One-Year Data compiled by Myra Snell (LMC) and Rolando Valdez (DO)

  15. Results: LMC has 5th highest one-year completion of transfer math in the state LMC % of students starting in transfer math Source: PPIC’s Remedial Education Reforms at California’s Community Colleges August 2018

  16. English Completion in One-Year Transfer-level English completion in one year Data compiled by Joellen Hiltbrand (LMC)

  17. Plans for final semester of the grant Develop curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments for new corequisite courses in Applied Calculus and Precalculusand work with faculty teaching them Develop curriculum for common texts, and training materials for the transfer-level English course

  18. Collaborate with counselors and Special Education Directors in feeder high schools on needs and accommodations used in high schools. • Collaborate with high school and LMC counselors to disseminate information about AB 705 and discuss implications of implementation.   • Collaborate with LMC faculty and DSPS professionals to discuss different needs that might arise in our classrooms.  This could also include some of the legality concerning the implementation of student accommodations and 504s

  19. We will be purchasing more tablets for the Math department to increase student access to needed technology. Class sets of books to help defray costs especially during first weeks of class Technological aids for DSPS students to increase access and more online tutoring hours from NetTutor for students in english classes
