  6. Similarities: • Brazil: Cheapest • Costa Rica: FairTrade

  7. Transport: • By ship: large cargo vessels with cooled areas where the pineapples are stored. • By plane: not used a lot because it costs lots of money • By haulage: cooled areas

  8. Storeroom 

  9. Cheese

  10. Origin • In Pre-historic times it was discovered that when milk turns sour the white curd tastes good and keeps well • Cheese is a fermented milk product when milk is coagulated • Usually it is made from cow’s milk however there are many varieties

  11. Why imported? • Different countries make different cheese with a different taste • So therefore imported to expand the cheese market. • Most countries produce cheese locally so import is limited.

  13. Similarities: Country’s specialties are imported to get the original and unique taste into most markets.

  14. Transport • Haulages: transported by cooled haulages • By ship: With large cooled areas • The cheese is covered with wax when transported to prevent extra mould or fungi growing.

  15. Mushrooms

  16. Origin • Discovered in 1650 • First edible mushrooms discovered in 1707 • Grew on melon horticultures of rotting melons

  17. Why imported? • Most mushrooms available to buy in Iceland, Germany and Belgium are cultivated in their own country. • Other mushrooms are imported from different countries as we are unable to cultivate them. • Reasons for importing include: the climate and wide variety of mushrooms.

  18. Examples of different types of mushrooms: Shii Take Oyster mushroom

  19. From who? Germany • From Germany itself in Rechterfeld, by refrigerated trucks • From France, by refrigerated trucks • From The United Kingdom, by refrigerated containers on ship

  24. Belgium • From Florida, by refrigerated containers on a ship • From Brazil, by refrigerated containers on a ship

  25. Salmon

  26. Where? • Salmon is a freshwater fish that is able to live in the sea as well. • When it’s breeding time they swim up the river to drop their eggs. • Salmons are only found North of the equator. • They only lay their eggs in cold, fast- streaming water. • Because nature can’t provide the salmon that is needed to supply the demand, so now salmons are bred in fish farms.

  27. Why imported? • We import salmon because there isn’t any salmon in Belgium and Hungary. • Because our European climate is too warm. • Our rivers are too polluted.

  28. From Who? • A big choice of salmon can be found in Norway, Scotland and Canada • It is transported by ship to the harbour of Antwerp. • Then it is moved by truck and haulage.

  29. Pigs

  30. Why imported? • Belgium, Hungary don’t import pigs or import only from their neighbours. • Belgium and Hungary have always been agricultural countries and had their own livestock keeping. So European countries export pigs to Asia and other countries.

  31. From who? • From pig farms in West- Flanders. • In West- Flanders there live more pigs than there live people. • The main city in Hungary where pigs are bred is Pécs.

  32. Mineral Water

  33. Why imported? • In Belgium and Hungary we import mineral water because there are not enough natural springs to supply the demand for mineral water. • We can’t purify unhealthy water because that’s too expensive.

  34. From who? • We have to import our water from regions near mountains or with lots of natural sources. • Belgium imports mineral water from France and Hungary from Poland or Italy. • The water is transported by truck to the local market and is mostly sold in glass or plastic bottles.

  35. Conclusion • We produce our basic food in our own countries or we import it from other countries of Europe • Tropical food, or food we can’t cultivate ourselves, we import from non-European countries • Each country has a complex import and export system to supply the demand within that country
