The Lusitania

What happened to the Lusitania when it set sail in May, 1915?

  • There were 1,959 passengers on board, including, 159 Americans and 123 children.
  • On May 7th, 1915, the Lusitania was blown up by a torpedo from a German submarine.
  • This incident angered Americans enough to want to enter the war but other factors were also involved in the decision to do so.

The Zimmerman Note
  • This telegram, known as the “Zimmerman Note,” was sent to Germany’s Minister in Mexico from the German Secretary of State, but it was intercepted and fell into American hands.
  • Why would this note spur America into war with Germany?
  • Germany offered Mexico U.S. land in exchange for help, which would bring the war to American shores.
