  2. PDC bits drill mainly by shearing while a vertical penetrating force from an applied weight on bit and horizontal force from the rotary table are transmitted into the cutters. As a result, the force defines a plane of thrust for the cutter. It is for this reason the cuttings are then sheared off at an initial angle that is relative to the plane of thrust which is further dependent on rock strength.
