  1. New C-AD Rule Theft Attempt at Building 919 Alert on Copper Thefts Photo of the Week E. Lessard Collider-Accelerator Department 4-5-11 Take 5 for Safety

  2. New C-D Rule for Building Security • Monday, April 4, 2011 Email to All C-AD Employees: • Many of the buildings of the C-AD complex have been found unsecured on weekends and during the night. This is unacceptable. I urge you to make sure that all doors to buildings that are not continuously occupied are locked. Blocking doors open is not allowed and when you enter or leave the building make sure the door locks behind you. Please report all doors that don’t close and lock automatically so that they can be repaired or retrofitted.Thank you for your attention to this important matter.Thomas Roser • Last evening (April 4) after 5 pm, C-AD found 7 chocked open doors and one open roll-up door at just one building

  3. Attempted Theft at Building 919 • What happened • On Sunday, April 3, 2011, BNL Fireman noticed a rollup door in building 919 (g-2 high bay area) was open • Upon investigating, 2 individuals on one motorized dirt bike drove up the 919 ramp and fled into the woods • The individuals on the bike dropped a tool bag as they drove away •  What we know so far • Clean up in 919 was completed on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 • On Friday, April 1, 2011, a C-AD  individual noticed the rollup door to the 919 high bay door was open • No items have been reported missing form 919 •  Investigation by BNL Laboratory Protection Division is ongoing

  4. Alert on Copper Thefts • There was an article in the February 7, 2011 NY Times cited in the recent FBI national Security Threat Awareness Bulletin concerning the near record prices for copper, aluminum, platinum and other metals that are causing  a resurgence in the past several months in the theft of common items, among them catalytic converters,  and copper wiring that is being stripped out of overhead power lines, warning sirens and foreclosed homes • Municipalities from Hawaii to Florida have experienced thieves electrocuting themselves and causing electrical and telephone failures and street light blackouts • The FBI considers the theft of copper wire to be a threat to the nations baseline ability to function • It is a good time to review our prevention program for copper theft, if we haven’t already done so
