  7. Study on Major Civilizations Cont’d Dr. D.J. Unwin, British Anthropologist, 1934 Book “Sex & Culture”, studied 86 cultures spanning 5,000 years of recorded human history "In human records, there is no instance of a society retaining its energy after a complete new generation has inherited a tradition which does not insist on pre-nuptial and post-nuptial continence."

  8. Study on Major Civilizations Cont’d Pitirim Sorokin, Russian Born Sociologist, late 60s “The American Sex Revolution” • America was committing “voluntary suicide” through unrestrained sexual indulgence • Predicted population decline, increase in divorce, family desertion and epidemic of sexual promiscuity resulting in a rise of illegitimate children • Convinced by studies he carried out, that society can only survive if strong families exist and sexual activities are restricted to within marriage.

  9. Quotation “The foundation of any “human” civilization is a moral and healthy sexual constitution, everything else is window-dressing” The Jerusalem Post, May 21, 1996

  10. Is it possible to Honor God • Is sexual purity possible? • Can a man/woman be faithful?

  11. Understanding Sexuality Begins with understanding who we are! (Man) i. Made in the image of God ii. Made male and female • Man has BODY/SOUL/SPIRIT - BODY = flesh, blood & bones - SOUL = mind, will & emotions - SPIRIT = worship, intuition, conscience

  12. Understanding Sexuality Cont’d • God made sex, relationships & marriage - Attractions between male & female) - Adolescence (Physical & Psychological changes) v. Sex is pure, clean, holy, spiritual, sacred - A great gift from God to mankind - Sex should be viewed from a positive viewpoint (Some cultures portray sex from a negative view point)

  13. Understanding Sexuality Cont’d • Purpose of sex (Reproduction/Pleasure/Bind) [Proverbs 5:17-19] • Nature of sex (Sex takes place in all the three components of a human being) BODY <=> BODY SOUL <=> SOUL SPIRIT <=> SPIRIT

  14. Understanding Sexuality Cont’d viii. Sex was designed to be experienced in MARRIAGE - In context of a secure, committed and intimate relationship of marriage • Sex is SAFE only within the context of MARRIAGE where faithfulness is practiced by both husband & wife - It is like a river which is only safe when water is within the boundary

  15. Prohibited Sexual Practices • Adultery: Exodus 20:14, • Fornication: Exodus 20:14, • Prostitution: Deut. 23:17 • Homosexuality/Lesbianism: Lev. 18:22 • Sex with close relative (by Blood & Marriage) Lev. 18 & 20 • Bestiality: Lev 18:23 • Deviant or un-natural sexual practices: Rom. 1:26-28

  23. Economic Consequences • High medical bills • Spend on sex related expenses • Lower standard of living

  24. Is it possible to Honor God • Is sexual purity possible? • Can a man/woman be faithful?

  25. What Does God Say? • God has already provided EVERTHING we need to live pure and victorious lives – II Peter 1:3 • We are KEPT by the POWER of God through faith – I Peter 1:5 • God is faithful and will NOT let you be TEMPTED beyond your strength – I Cor 10:13 • God will provide a way of ESCAPE so that you can stand I Cor 10:13 • Anyone who falls into sexual sin has chosen to do so • God is able to keep you from falling – Jude 24

  26. So, YES it is possible to be sexually pure and to honor God in our sexuality, if we follow His plans & strategies

  27. Why is Sexual Purity Elusive? i. LIES FROM SATAN • It is impossible to be sexually pure • It is not easy but it is possible • Is it easy to pass exams, get a job, get married? • Everybody is doing it • If you don’t have sex early, you will become impotent or will not have children later • “Practice makes perfect”, so you must practice sex so that you know what to do when you get married • Sex is everything in life, so get it by hook or crook • You can get away with and nobody will find out • It is unreasonable to expect youth to abstain • A man cannot be satisfied by one woman, he must have more than one. • If you have already committed sexual sin then there is no hope for you

  28. Why is Sexual Purity Elusive? • IGNORANCE OF SATAN’S DEVICES • II Cor. 2:11 “Lest Satan should get an advantage over us for we are not ignorant of his devices” • Christians should not be naïve, but need to be aware of Satan’s tricks iii. GIVING CHANCE TO THE FLESH • “Make no provision for the flesh” – Romans 13:14 • The flesh is constantly at war with the Spirit • If you allow the flesh to rule your life, you will end up in sexual sin

  29. Why is Sexual Purity Elusive? • IGNORANCE OF GOD • Paul warns Christians who are ignorant of God – I Cor 15:34 • “Come back to your senses as you ought, STOP SINNING, for there are some of you who are ignorant of God” • Ignorance of God will lead to sexual sin • LACK OF THE FEAR OF GOD • Moses tells the Israelites that God was showing His miraculous power for the intent that “…the fear of God will be with you to keep you from SINNING” Exodus 20:20 • If your heart is callous and insensitive to God you need to repent of a heart that is not “soft” towards the things of God • You need to ask God to deal with you and your hard heart • Check your heart for a rebellious spirit – The Spirit of the Lord will not always strive with man – Genesis 6

  30. Why is Sexual Purity Elusive? • LACK OF GOD’S WORD IN US • “How can a Youngman keep his way pure? By living according to your word” Psalm 119:9 • “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” Psalm 119:11 • IGNORING OUR CONSCIENCE • John says “…if our heart condemn us not, then we have confidence…” I John 3:21 • Paul used a clear conscience as part of his defense – Acts 23:1 • As a Christian, the Holy Spirit sometimes uses our conscious to keep us from sin and trouble. Ignoring your conscience can be very dangerous.

  31. Tips of Staying Sexually Pure • Know that you can fall • No one is too strong to fall, King David fell, Abraham fell • Paul warns us in Galatians 6:1 “ …if a man is overtaken in a fault… restore such in a spirit of meekness…lest you also be tempted” • Even Paul was careful I Cor 9:27 “…lest after proclaiming to others I myself might be rejected (disqualified)” • Paul again says “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall” I Cor 10:12 • Keep your thoughts pure - Phil 4:8 • The real battle is worn or lost in the mind • Don’t allow yourself to think immoral thoughts, they are sin before God (Matt 5:28) • You can not avoid temptation but you can avoid falling into sin. Luke 17:1

  32. Tips of Staying Sexually Pure iii. Prayerfully set your own limits and standards in accordance with Scripture • Daniel “predetermined /(laid on his heart) that he would not defile himself” – Daniel 1:8 • How you will behave with the opposite sex, how you socialize, should you hug, what kind of hugs, can you be in the same room with doors locked, can you sleep in the same room and you are not married, who do you give lifts etc. • Avoid people and places you know will lead you into sexual involvement • Don’t avail yourself for debates on limits you have set for yourself, Satan WILL out reason you.

  33. Tips of Staying Sexually Pure iv. Guard your eyes • Ps 101:3“ I will set no wicked thing before my eyes” • David knew from experience the danger of unguarded eyes. • How much blue movies, pornography, sex filled novels etc do you consume? • They eventually will affect your values, attitudes and ultimately behaviour. They are not innocent. • If you cannot handle the small temptations, you will fail when the big one comes, but if you can handle the small ones, you WILL overcome the big ones as well

  34. Tips of Staying Sexually Pure v. Be accountable • Ecclesiastes 4:10b “… But pity the man who fails and has no one to help him up” • Have a person or people who hold you accountable and can ask you the hard questions about your sexual life

  35. Restoration After Moral Failure i. Acknowledge your sin • Know that you have sinned against God (Psalm 51:4) • God has seen all you have done • Proverbs 5:21 “For a man’s ways are in full view of the Lord and He examines them” ii. Confess your sin to God • God has promised to forgive (I John 1:9) • God has no problem forgiving the sin, but you may have to live with the consequences of your sin

  36. Restoration After Moral Failure iii. Acknowledge Gods forgiveness • Psalm 32:5 “Then I acknowledged my sin before you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, ““I will confess my transgressions to the Lord and you forgave the GUILT of my sin”” • Jesus’ blood paid for our sins once and for all. (Heb.10:10-18) iv. Forgive yourself • If God has forgiven you and you don’t forgive yourself, then you are essentially rejecting what God has already done for you

  37. Restoration After Moral Failure v. Bring forth Fruit of Repentance • Matthew 3:8 “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance” • Take action that reflects your repentance • Breakup an immoral relationship; don’t have to consult them. Inform them after your decision. • Cut off links with things that led you to sexual activity; parties/places/people/books/pornography etc • Find someone to be accountable to; Ecclesiastes 4:10b “… But pity the man who fails and has no one to help him up”

  38. Restoration After Moral Failure • Handle the memories positively • Determine not to live in the past. Philippians 3:13-14 “…forgetting what is behind …I press on …” • (You cannot change history, but you can change the present and the future) • Acknowledge it, don’t deny or suppress it • Turn the thought in a positive direction and thank God that you are forgiven. It will make you stronger next time you face temptation. • If necessary, see a counselor

  39. Challenge to Abstinence & Faithfulness The True Love Waits Card reads: - Believing that True Love waits, I make a commitment to God, myself, my family, my country, my friends, my future mate and my future children to be sexually pure until the day I give myself only to my marriage partner in a covenant marriage relationship Name____________________________ Signature_________________________ Date_____________________________
