The Cardiovascular System By Hpesoj, Kcaj, Yelrah, Rolyat
What it Does The purpose of the Cardiovascular system is to pump blood around the body. The Blood caries the oxygen that the cells need to burn in respiration to provide energy. The Blood also carries the white blood cells which fight disease and bacteria. The next slide will give a basic overview of the Cardiovascular system.
Overview The main organ in the cardiovascular system is the heart, it pumps the blood, which carries the oxygen (O2), around the body. The heart pumps the blood through/to the lungs where it expels the waste carbon dioxide (produced by the cells in respiration) and collects oxygen. From there it is taken back to the heart and then transported around the body to where it is needed, then the cycle repeats with the waste carbon dioxide pumped back to the lungs. The next slides will go over this process in detail.
The Heart The heart is the main organ in the Cardiovascular system, its job is to pump blood around the body. It is made up of two main parts, the left side and the right side. These two sides do different jobs and the next two slides will go over those roles.
Systemic Circuit The left side of the heart controls what is known as the systemic circuit, its job is to pump oxygenated blood (oxygen rich blood) to the rest of the body via arteries and then pump it back to the right side of the heart via the veins.
From the Heart to the Body • The blood is pumped through arteries (small tubes) to the rest of the body. • This artery branches into several smaller arterioles, then again into even smaller capillaries. • This ensures the blood reaches every part of the body. • The blood oozes slowly back to the right side of the heart throgh the veins.
Pulmonary Circuit The right side of the heart controls the Pulmonary Circuit. The job of the Pulmonary Circuit is to pump deoxygenated blood, to the lungs where the hemoglobin in the blood collects oxygen. The re-oxygenated blood is then pumped back to the left side of the heart and the cycle repeats.
What the Blood Does • The blood is responsible for two jobs. • 1st – Taking oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. • 2nd- Carrying white blood cells to fight disease within the body. • 3rd- Carrying nutrients around the body.
Why We Need Oxygen • Oxygen plays a vital part in respiration, the process of turning food into energy. • Without energy, our organs would stop, and we would die.
White Blood Cells • White blood cells destroy evil bacteria within the body. Without the cardiovascular system acting as a transport system, we’d get really sick really quickly, because then the white blood cells would not be able to reach the area of infection before it was too late.
