The Cardiovascular System • The cardiovascular system is sometimes called the circulatory system. • As the system’s name implies, the blood in the circulatory system is continually pumped by the heart through the various “circulations” of the body. • This body system is part of the early development of the embryo, as it is necessary for survival. The Heart • The heart is a muscle whose size can be compared to that of a clenched fist. • It contracts and relaxes approximately seventy times per minute during rest. • The heart pumps blood through all of its chambers to all parts of the body. Blood • Blood is the fluid of life, growth, and health. • It transports oxygen from the lungs to various body tissues. • It transports carbon dioxide from various body tissues to the lungs. • Blood also transports nourishment and disease-fighting substances throughout the body. Blood Types • Blood type AB can receive blood types AB, A, B, and O safely. • Blood type A can receive blood types A and O safely. • Blood type B can receive blood types B and O safely. • Blood type O can only receive blood type O safely.
