  3. Please discuss with your teammates and answer the following questions. 1. Suppose your grandparents are celebrating their 50th anniversary at the end of this November. Can you choose a proper tour as a gift for them? 2. What is rural tourism? What are the benefits for developing rural tourism in China?  3. What should a tour guide take into account when he/she makes up the itinerary? 4. When the travel agency has arranged the local travel schedule for the tour group, is it necessary for the local guide to discuss it with the tour leader?

  4. Reference for answering the questions 1. I would suggest a “10-day senior tour to Yunnan” for my grandparents, because first, Yunnan is a beautiful place they have dreamed of for many years. Second, the tour is specially designed for senior citizens, so the activities are not too challenging. This group consists of 20 members plus one doctor who will accompany the tourists for the whole journey. Third, they will take trains to and from Kunming, which is an ideal means of transportation for old people. My grandparents can take a rest onboard and meanwhile enjoy the views across several provinces.

  5. 请在此输入您的标题 2. Rural tourism allows urban travelers to experience a rural lifestyle by strolling in the fields, participating in the harvest and visiting the village museum. Children will have great fun and learn something in addition to book knowledge. It can create many job opportunities for the local population and bring a stable source of income as well.

  6. 3. An itinerary consists of items such as the tour title, tour code, day-to-day events, cities, duration and a descriptive account of the tour. The tour title usually highlights the length and the location of the tour; day-to-day events give more specific information about the cities, the scenic spots, the hotels and means of transportation; the descriptive account should give an overall view of the travel route and destinations. A detailed itinerary should also include relevant information concerning the level of service, the tour grade, travel expenses, the number of tour members, etc.

  7. 4. Yes, it is. Before the arrival of a tour group, the guide should study in detail the reception program and draft a tentative itinerary. And this itinerary needs to be discussed with and approved by the tour leader upon the arrival of the group. As buyers of service, the tourists are entitled to know the content of service which they will be provided with, so it’s advisable that the guide coordinate with the tour leader about the itinerary as soon as the group checks in.

  14. Possible tips for reference A complete itinerary consists of items such as tour title, tour code, day-to-day events, cities, duration and a descriptive account of the tour. In addition, a more detailed itinerary should also include relevant information concerning the level of service, the tour grade (whether it is a standard or luxury group), total travel expenses, the number of tour members, etc. in accordance with the contract made between the tourists and the travel agency. 3. As a guide, you also have the responsibility to introduce some of the governmental rules to the tourists.

  15. Cultural Differences Listen and enrich your knowledge Gift Giving Customs There are some countries in which a small gift is expected at the first meeting. These include Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, Bolivia, Columbia, Costa Rica, Russia, Poland, and Ukraine. In most western countries, like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United States, and in Europe, gifts are a way to show appreciation and further relationships, but are not given as frequently. Some tips on common gifts: Desk and office accessories, cigarette lighter, a quality bottle of wine, chocolate, flowers. In Asia and the Middle East to only use your right hand, or both hands, to offer or accept a gift. In Japan and Hong Kong China, use both hands.

  16. Related Special Terms Discussing schedules Activities involved

  17. Practice I. Complete the following dialogues in English with the information given. Certainly. Here is a tentative plan I drafted. Please take a look at it and let me know your opinion. Should everything be slow and relaxing? Shall I put off the wake-up call until 8:30? If we get up late, we will probably not be able to visit some of the places in the plan. Then what are they interested in, and what shall we skip? May I have a look at it? That’s not a difficult job for me. Here is my mobile number. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with me, if you run into problems.

  18. Practice 2. now that you’ve finished with your check-in, shall we have a brief discussion about what we are going to do tomorrow and the day after? I planned to leave at 9:00. Is that all right? As a native of Nanjing, I suggest you visit the Zhongshan tourist area for the first day of the trip. For the morning, we will visit Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum and Ming Tombs. When it gets dark, we will have a walk in the Confucius Temple and taste some famous Qinhuai snacks. However, I can promise you something unique in the Confucius Temple. During the Ming Dynasty, the temple served as a school for children of the imperial court. It’s quite different from other Buddhist temples. It’s worth visiting.

  19. Practice 3. The next day can be spent by Xuanwu Lake, After lunch, you can go shopping in Xinjiekou Commercial Circle. It ranks third in China, only behind Wangfujing in Beijing and Nanjing Road in Shanghai. If you are interested in the history of China, the alternative is a visit to the former Office of the President. we will give up shopping then.

  20. Practice II. Make role-plays based on the following situations. Three students are to play the roles of the tour guide and Mr. and Mrs. Davis. They are discussing the following itinerary of a two-day tour in Shanghai. Day 1, morning--- Jinmao Grand Tower and Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower afternoon--- Fudan University Day 2, morning--- Yuyuan Garden afternoon--- a visit to a local family. 2. A group of American tourists headed by Mr. Brown arrives in Hangzhou in March. They will stay in Hangzhou for two days. Miss Li, the local guide is discussing the itinerary with Mr. Brown. The tentative schedule that Miss Li drafted contains a visit to the tea museum, while Mr. Brown insists on visiting a tea plantation instead. They are trying to reach an agreement to achieve mutual satisfaction. Two students are to play the roles of Miss Li and Mr. Brown. 3. Two students are to play the roles of Mr. Zhu, the local guide, and Mr. Jackson, the tour leader. Mr. Zhu has prepared a preliminary three-day sightseeing schedule for the group during their stay in Beijing. He is now explaining and discussing it with Mr. Jackson, who seems to be quite satisfied with the arrangement. .

  21. Practice III. Put the following Chinese into English. ( Possible Answer) A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step./He who would climb the ladder must begin at the bottom. 2. We can widen our horizon, make new friends and taste the specialties through travelling.

  22. Practice 3. Before the arrival of a tour group, the local guide should study the reception program in detail and get enough information on the tour members so as to draft a tentative itinerary. 4. A tour guide should abide by the accepted practice of “regarding tourists as supreme”. It would be unwise and unacceptable for a tour guide to impose his/her personal interests upon his/her guests.
