  2. Root tip and promeristems Where is the actual apical meristem? As cells behind the meristem elongate, it pushes the root tip through the soil.

  3. Root cap The root cap is lubricated by slippery mucilage, which helps the root tip move through the soil.

  4. Stem apical meristem and promeristems Apical regions of stems are more complex than root apical regions, because stems are exposed to much more variable environments, and because stem apical meristems produce leaves. Identify apical meristem, leaf primordium, bud primordium, protoderm, ground meristem, procambium, trichomes. Compare this picture with Fig. 25-2 on p. 548, and Fig. 25-28 on p. 568 in your textbook.

  5. Mitosis review All of the main mitotic phases are visible in these pictures. You should be able to recognize all of the mitotic phases under a microscope and arrange them in the proper sequence.
