  1. DWARFISM BY:JORDAN CATES MR. BROWN PERIOD 8

  2. What is dwarfism? • According to Dictionary.com, Dwarfism is basically “a person of abnormally small stature owing to a pathological condition, especially one suffering from cretinism or some other disease that produces disproportion or deformation of features and limbs.” • http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dwarf

  3. Is dwarfism a chromosomal disorder? • Yes, it is indeed a chromosomal disorder. • Dwarfism is caused by a genetic disorder known as achondroplasia, which is caused by a mistake on chromosome 4.

  4. Causes of dwarfism • “Dwarfism results from random mutation in either the father's sperm or the mother's egg rather than being in either parent's complete genetic makeup.” • http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dwarfism/DS01012/DSECTION=causes

  5. Symptoms of dwarfism • Body size is disproportionate • Some body parts may be smaller than others • Shortness • Average size trunk • Short limbs • Excess fluid around the brain • Limited mobility at the elbows • Large head • Swayed lower back, hunch back • http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dwarfism/DS01012/DSECTION=symptoms

  6. Treatments for dwarfism • Treatments are rather hard with dwarfism because its usually a lifetime disease. You cant really fix it and you most likely cant grow very much. There is medicine that dwarfs can take to help build there bones up considering there bones are a little bit more weak compared to a “normal” human. So there really isn’t a treatment for dwarfism.

  7. Prognosis of dwarfism • People with dwarfism are typically very short. That’s really the only thing humans notice around a dwarf. People with dwarfism are the same exact as the rest of us, just shorter and have a weaker body to deal with. As you saw in my other slide, the symptoms of the dwarfs explain it all. Fluid around the brain can be very bad and maybe even fatal. There no different from the rest of us, they just are shorter and have certain body parts that are disproportional.
