  1. Universal Design for Learning and The Common Core Presented by: Carla Kolodey (JCPS)

  2. Brief Overview of UDL • Based on universal design concept from architecture (curb cut-outs) • Focus on the curriculum and its limitations • How do these limitations disable learners? • The burden of adaptation should be placed on the curricula, not the learner • Eliminating the barriers without eliminating the challenges • No longer focusing on just the “average” student (not the bowling ball) Universal Design of Learning

  3. What impact does this have on my students? • Turning novice learners into expert learners: • *individuals who want to learn • *individuals who know how to learn strategically • *individuals who are well prepared for life-long learning • *focus on all students

  4. The Concept and Framework Of UDL The Concept: UDL is a framework that addresses the primary barrier to fostering expert learners within instructional environments: inflexible, “one-size-fits-all” curricula The Framework: Encourages creating flexible designs from the start that have customizable options, which allow all learners to progress from where they are and not to find where we would have imagined them to be.

  5. The Three Principles of UDL: • Multiple Means of Representation • Multiple Means of • Expression • 3. Multiple Means of Engagement

  6. Multiple Means of Representation The “What” of Learning Provide Options for Perception Provide Options for Language and Symbols Provide Options for Comprehension

  7. Multiple Means of Expression The “How” of Learning Provide Options for Physical Action Provide Options for Expressive Skills and Fluency Provide Options for Executive Functions

  8. Multiple Means of Engagement The “WHY” of Learning Provide Options for Recruiting Interest Provide Options for Sustaining Effort and Persistence Provide Options for Self-Regulation

  9. How does this relate to the Common Core? Let’s look at the progression of Standards
