  2. Some Facts • World Heritage Site since 1982 • On the 1996 Watch List • It incorporates elements of Persian, Indian and Islamic architecture, in a style called the Mughal style.

  3. History Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had this mausoleum built in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631. The construction started in 1632 and finished in 1648.

  5. Monument Design The main building has an octagonal structure with a dome cap. It stands on a base of sandstone and a square platform with a black and white checkerboard pattern. The inlay is decorated with precious stones, ie jade and turquoise.

  7. The Surroundings The complex is surrounded by a 300 feet square garden; this garden is divided into 16 flowerbeds. It is located in the north end of the ornamental gardens. On the east and west sides, there are red sandstone buildings. On the west is also the mosque facing Mecca that serves as place of worship. The fourth side faces the river and is left open.
