EPIDEMIOLOGY • SSA more heavily affected by HIV/AIDS than any region in the world • 22.4 million live with HIV, i.e 2/3 of the global total • In 2008, 1.4 million people died of AIDS in SSA, 1.9 million became infected • Since the beginning of the epidemic > 14million people have lost one/both parents to AIDS.

  6. EPID(contd) • Prevalence rates vary across Africa • < 1% in countries like Senegal • b/n 5.1%-6% in Gabon and Nigeria • Thru 15-27% in some southern african countries like Swaziland.

SSA FACES A TRIPLE CHALLENGE • Providing health care, ART treatment and support to a growing population of people with HIV related illnesses. • Reducing the annual toll of new HIV infections by enabling individuals to protect themselves and others. • Coping with the impact of over 20 million AIDS deaths, orphans and other survivors, community and national development

  13. CONCLUSION • As medical students we have an enormous task • HIV/AIDS in Africa needs not to be accepted as a tragedy, victory is possible. • FAMSA can and Has to lead the way for the next generation of leaders.
