Establishment of the EEA • European Council Regulation 1210/90 on the establishment of the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet) • Operational in Copenhagen, Denmark since 1994 • Annual budget 2008 of approx. 36 MEuro • Approx. 160 staff members

  4. Mandate of the EEA • To help the Community and member countries make informed decisions about improving the environment, integrating environmental considerations into economic policies and moving towards sustainability • To coordinate the European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet)

  5. The EEA is... • An independent information provider • An analyst and assessor • A bridge builder between science and policy • ...to support policy processes and inform the public, dependent upon strong networks to carry out its work

  6. Who are EEA’s clients? Institutions and governments European Commission, Parliament, Council, EEA member countries Influencers NGOs, business, media, advisory groups, scientists, debaters General public

  8. EEA also collaborates with Mediterranean countries in North Africa and the Middle East Under the: -EuroMed process (Barcelona Declaration) & Horizon 2020 -Mediterranean Action Plan (Barcelona Convention)
