  4. The Curies had two daughters, Irene and Eve.

  5. In 1903, Marie and Pierre discovered two radioactive elements, which they named Radium and Polonium . Marie and Pierre won the Nobel Prize in physics for their work, and eight years later, Marie later won another Nobel Prize in chemistry.

  6. In 1906, Pierre was killed in a street accident. Marie continued his teaching position as professor of physics at the Sorbonne. She was 39 years old.

  7. During World War 1, Marie organized mobile x-ray units that used radioactive materials to soldiers in the field with shrapnel and fracture wounds.

  8. Here is Marie with some of her scientific colleagues– can you find Marie and Albert Einstein?

  9. “Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained.”

[Scientific work] must be done for itself, for the beauty of science, and then there is always the chance that a scientific discovery may become, like the radium, a benefit for mankind. ”
