  1. Southwest Education Center Welcome!

  2. Moraine Valley’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building

  3. Recognized for environmentally sustainable practices

  4. Sustainable elements provide a natural alternative to energy management

  5. Reflective white roof cuts energy bills and greenhouse gases

  6. Green roof reduces heat during warm seasons/cooling during cold seasons, insulates for sound, and increases roof’s lifespan

  7. Bioswale temporarily stores storm water runoff from solid surfaces and, along with detention ponds and porous pavement, protects from flooding

  8. Geothermal heat pump transfers heat stored in the earth and in-ground water into building in winter and out in summer

  9. Elevator uses approximately half the energy of conventional traction machines and is made of 95% recyclable materials

  10. Daylighting replaces artificial lighting fixtures with natural lighting from windows and external louvers

  11. Lighting controls with automatic shutoff include occupancy sensors

  12. Construction materials were recycled to avoid burden on landfills

  13. Recycled content in ceiling tiles and drywall helps improve energy and acoustical performance

  14. Rapidly renewable bamboo was used in casework

  15. Native, drought-resistant vegetated trees and ground cover reduces consumption of water in maintaining landscaping

  16. Low-flow plumbing fixtures mean less water waste

  17. Recycled and renewable furniture and fabric materials are GreenGuard certified, reducing impact on indoor air quality

  18. Tables and chairs were crafted from recycled aluminum, recycled vehicle seatbelts, and rapidly renewable linoleum

  19. Materials such as adhesives, paints, tiles, carpeting, wood products, and cleaning supplies contain minimal volatile organic compound (VOC)

  20. Prior to occupancy, the center underwent a flush-out that tempered mechanical system with 100% outside air to reduce possible indoor air-quality contamination

  21. Our environmentally sustainable facility is meeting today’s needs without compromising tomorrow’s
