Team Size & Number of Teams “How big and how many??” depends on: • How activity is modified. • Type of competition planned (e.g. graded • or progressive competition; co-ed. vs. single gender). • Handling of student absences. • How students manage practice and • competition tasks.

Selecting Students to Teams Fairness and equal competition are a key concern for students Selection method is influenced by: • How well you know your students. • How well your students know each other. • Students’ familiarity with the sport. • Students’ familiarity with Sport Education
Selecting Students to Teams (cont’d.) Team selection options: • Teacher makes selection. • Teacher selects with assistance from Team Coaches or Selection Panel.
Selecting Team Coaches • Teacher selects them at start of season. • Students apply to be coaches.
Selecting Coaches • Teacher selects them at start of season. • Students apply to be coaches. • Students vote by secret ballot for one of the nominated students.
Choosing A Selection Panel Selection Panel can be selected in ways similar to team coaches. Over time, student should gain increased ownership in selecting teams!
Using Students As Selectors • ALL students should be considered for selector role. • Establish clear criteria that students can use in selecting teams. • ALL panel discussions should remain confidential
Team Affiliation A strong sense of affiliation is developed through: • Uniforms (consider cost & affordability) • Dedicated team practice areas. • Team bulletin boards. • Getting teams to practice beyond class time.
Team Portfolios Reflect a team’s identity, strengths, and improvements over a season . . . • Possible content: • Team name & logo. • Player names w. profile. • Team Philosophy. • Log off. & def. Plays. • Team selected artifacts.
