Communication with Members and Social Exchange Theory • OUTCOME = Benefits – Costs • Benefits are material/financial gains, social status, knowledge, emotional comforts • Costs are sacrifices of time, money, energy, or lost opportunities • SATISFACTION = Outcome – Comparison Level • Need to compare the outcome to alternative • Two people can have different levels of satisfaction • DEPENDENCE = Set of Outcomes – Set of Comparison Level
