  29. MCAS Packet #2 Answers 3. The poet expresses his guilt over killing the man in several ways. First, he explains that had he and the man met “at some old ancient inn,” they probably would have become friends, but because they met on the battlefield, he considered the man a foe and killed him. In the third stanza, he repeats the word “foe,” which makes it seem as though he is trying to convince himself that the man was really an enemy and to justify the killing. However, at the end of the poem, he refers to war as “quaint and curious,” which seems like a sarcastic way of showing that he is critical of war and feels guilty that he had to kill a man whom he otherwise would have considered a friend. For example, in paragraph 13, Monsieur Lantin’s wife wraps the jewels around her finger and remarks, “One would swear they were real.” Later, the author writes, “She would examine the false gems with a passionate attention, as though they imparted some deep and secret joy.” This line suggests that Lantin’s wife knows something about the gems that she has not shared with her husband. Identify specific test-taking strategies for answering main idea and supporting details questions in relation to a reading passage on the MCAS exam.

  31. Objective/SWBAT Identify specific test-taking strategies for answering vocabulary questions in relation to a reading passage on the MCAS exam. Test-taking Strategies for answering multiple choice question and reading passages • Preview the questions before you read so you have a reading focus. • Read actively– annotate the text by taking margin summary notes– this will help you go back and answer questions. • If the passage is short, re-read it– often it takes more than one reading to understand what the passage is about– this is especially true of poems. • Read the directions carefully for each section. • Underline key words in the directions. • Try to answer the question WITHOUT looking at the answers. • Read all possible answer choices for multiple choice questions. • Use process of elimination to answer multiple choice • Look back at the text to find answers.

  32. Main Idea • The main idea is what the passage is mostly about • In fiction, it is not usually stated outright • For fiction, ask yourself: what is the story or poem mostly about? • In a nonfiction passage, the main idea is often presented in the introduction (and/or is hinted in the title) • Choose the answer that tells what the ENTIRE passage is about (not just part) • BUT be careful of questions that ask you what the main idea of PART of the passage is • Read questions carefully and make sure you know what it is asking!

  33. Supporting Details • Supporting details are points that support the main idea (nonfiction) or theme (fiction) of a work • Most of these answers are found directly in the text (GO BACK TO FIND THEM!) Tuesday, 12/21/10Objectives: SWBAT1. review MCAS packet #1 & 2 and explain the correct solution to the answers they got wrong.2. Identify specific test-taking strategies for answering main idea and supporting details questions in relation to a reading passage on the MCAS exam.

What reading strategies did you use to understand the difficult language?
