  1. To review: • A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined • Two types: • Homogeneous: Uniform mixture • Heterogeneous: not the same throughout

  2. Solution • Two or more substances mixed so it appears to be made of only one substance • Particles are evenly dispersed • Particles are small • Cannot settle out of the mixture. • There are two parts: • · SOLUTE: the substance that dissolves • · SOLVENT: the substance the SOLUTE dissolves in • Would this be Homogeneous or Heterogeneous?

  3. Suspension • Particles are large and are dispersed throughout the mixture • Particles can block light • Particles can settle out if the mixture is left standing • Parts can be separated by filtering • Examples: Chocolate milk, orange juice, snow globes • Would this be Homogeneous or Heterogeneous?

  4. Colloid • Particles are small to medium size • They can block light. • They are dispersed throughout the mixture • Cannot settle out. • Particles cannot be filtered or picked out. • Examples: Whipped cream, Jell-o, deodorant • Would this be Homogeneous or Heterogeneous?

  5. MATTER Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume) ELEMENT “Pure Substance” made of only one type of atom; COMPOUND Combination of two or more different elements; can be broken down into elements by chemical means MIXTURES Combinations of substances that are not chemically combined; they can be separated by physical means HOMOGENEOUS Mixture whose parts are evenly distributed; you cannot see the different parts easily HETEROGENEOUS Mixture whose parts are unevenly distributed; you can see the different parts easily COLLOID Particles are medium Dispersed throughout But do not settle out SOLUTION Appears as one substance Particles are small and do not settle SUSPENSION Particles are large and can settle out
