Introduction • The real self and the ideal self are terms used to describe personality domains in the psychology. • The degree to which the two selves are congruent एकरुप, is equal to the degree of peace of mind. • Carl Rogers believed that for a person to achieve self-actualization they must be in a state of congruence. 

  3. Introduction • Carl Rogers believed that for a person to achieve self-actualization they must be in a state of congruence.  • This means that self-actualization occurs when a person's “ideal self” (i.e. who they would like to be) is congruent with their actual behavior (self-image).

  4. Meaning • The real self is who I am.  • Who we actually are • How we think, feel, look and act • The ideal self is who I want to be.  • How we want to be • An idealized image that we have developed over time, based on what we have learned and experienced Real Self Ideal Self

  5. Meaning • It is our self image • It is true self • It is actual self • Have you ever wondered who you really are, deep down inside?  • What are parents have taught us • What we admire in others • What are society's promotes • What we think is in our best interest Real Self Ideal Self

  6. Meaning • Real self is what you really are from inside whereas • The real self of course is what we are intrinsically • Ideal self is where you see yourself, what you want to become • Moulding you, shaping you, and potentially slotting you into a definition of you that is not your own Real Self Ideal Self

  7. Examples • She showed her true/real self in that emergency • My ideal self image includes honesty • My ideal self image includes a strong work ethic Real Self Ideal Self

  8. Exercise 1: Real Self ----------------------------Ideal Self • Mark an X on the line below where you think your Real Self is right now. • Then mark an X on the line where you think your Ideal Self is. Real Self Ideal Self

  9. Exercise 1: Real Self ----------------------------Ideal Self • There is probably a gap between your two crosses. • The larger the gap, the worse you are going to feel about yourself. • But don’t panic… there are things that can help you close this gap. Real Self Ideal Self

Exercise 2: Part – I • Describe how your feel about your appearance in as much detail as you can. • Describe what you can do to make the most of your appearance as it is now, include things you already do • Describe your ideal appearance in as much detail as possible Part – II • How would you adjust your ideal self to make it more realistic for you to achieve?
