  2. Mass Movements • Mass movements alter Earth’s surface over time due to gravity moving sediments and rocks downslope. • Because climate has a major effect on the weathering that occurs in a particular area, climate determines the extent of mass movements.

  8. Avalanches • About 10,000 occur each year in the western United States • Radiation from the sun can melt the surface snow and then refreeze at night into ice. If new snow falls on top of the ice, it becomes too heavy to support and slips down the mountain side

  9. Wind • Wind modifies landscapes in all areas of the world by transporting sediment. • Limited precipitation leads to an increase in the amount of wind erosion. • Wind transport and erosion primarily occur in areas with little vegetative cover.

  10. How Sediment is Moved • Deflation – the lowering of the land surface that results from the wind’s removal of surface particles • Abrasion – when sand particles rub against the surface of rocks or other materials.

  11. How Sediment is Deposited Sand dunes --hills of sand deposited by winds --they form when sand piles up against shrubs, boulders, or other obstructions
